cnet really needs to do a better job on these software areas. Erroneous specs, broken links.

"Don't bother"
Version: Mac2Phone 1.93
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've been using this program and service for a couple of years. At first, it was pretty neat. I'm not real happy with this product and service any longer based upon comparisons I make later in this review. The service has been fairly unreliable, in fact pretty spotty service almost all the time. The best thing about it was and still is inexpensive to call other countries when compared to conventional long distance carriers.Since I've had the opportunity to use Skype and Gizmo. Both of these products are head and shoulders above Nikotel. The sound quality of Nikotel, when compared with Skype and Gizmo is abysmal. The calling rates are roughly equal, but point to point service, definitely has its benefits to Nikotel's, I think, server based system.
In summary I'd think, unless there are major changes to Nikotel's reliability of service, I'd suggest checking out other options. As soon as my credit is used up, I'll be taking my SIP phone to another VOIP carrier service.

"1.93 loads and logs in, but no microphone"
Version: Mac2Phone 1.93

I used v1.91 while living in China to call the US: it was fantastic. The lag was huge, but I got used to talking like a WWII radio operator.
Since I came back, I got a new machine with Panther and had to upgrade to the latest version of Nikotel, 1.93. It loads and lets me log in, and I can make calls: but no audio input I choose in System Preferences > Sound is recognized! Of course this makes the program pretty much unusable: I can hear my girlfriend in China saying "hello? hello?" but that gets old fast.
Does anyone have a link to (or installer package for) version 1.92? It is nowhere to be found on the Nikotel site. -
"Works, most of the time...1.93 is a dud for me"

I've been using nikotel's mac client for quite a while. I've never been %100 satisfied with the product....always things you have to work around or deal with...including random crashes (10.3.2 on a G5). Their network doesn't seem to be all that reliable either. Sometimes calls are simply not able to be made, other times the person I'm talking to says I sound like a chipmunk. I have a decent DSL connection.
Version 1.93 crashes on launch...emailed nikotel's support and got no response. I'm still with 1.92 now, and use this ONLY because there is nothing cheaper for international calls. 1.9 cents to germany is outstanding. Latency is something I've gotten used to. Its not nearly as bad as with chat clients like AIM or iChat. I'll keep it around at least until my girlfriend moves back to the US :D -

"I don't have a telephone..."

This thing is great! I've been using it for over a year... had a few difficulties at first, but version 1.92 is it!
1.92 has fixed a problem with my wireless network. I have no idea what the router is... some generic thing that one of the guys picked up at the local discount store... Before this current version I couldn't make calls on the wireless...but now it's no prob.
I've found that upping the packet size helped the quality of my conversations. As well, I switched to the DSM codec, which took the muffled sound out of conversations.
I'm using an iMic with a generic headset... with fabulous results on an iBook 600 (16MB VRAM) 640 RAM (OS X.3.1)
I would encourage Nikotel to make their credit card payment system easier... I am a patient person, but waiting to have my card approved.... it's just too long, eh.
But I would recommend this to anyone... it works great! -

I am so bummed! This service was difficult to get started (billing problems) then worked okay for about 3 days. Now I can't connect 30 percent of the time and when I do I get disconnected almost immediatly (within 30 seconds). It's a great concept but what a dissappointment!
I tried X-Lite and that was a nightmare - complicated setup and didn't work once I got it setup. -

Download link was non-functional, so I extracted the plain URL from it and was able to download it. Installed it and ran. Tried to quit, and it has hung. It's still giving me a scod, so I'm going to force quit it and fire it into the trash. -
