Publisher's Description
From sttz.ch:
This is an unofficial extended version of the MPlayer OSX GUI.
While MPlayer is the superior media player for OSX and has a very nice GUI, it was lacking in access to the many powerful functions the backend provides and development hasn't been very fast. Since I had some time on my hands I decided to learn Cocoa and improve the MPlayer OSX GUI.
In the process, I also figured out how to compile a redistributable version of the mplayer core and provide a recent build from the SVN.
Changes to the GUI include:
- Fullscreen controls
- More video filter options (Postprocessing, Deinterlace etc)
- Support for styled ASS subtitles
- Audio and video equalizers (not yet interactive)
- Taking Screenshots
- Stream selection
- Various interface improvements
What's new in this version:
- Fullscreen controls
- Automatic updates with Sparkle
- Font and font style selection with Fontconfig
- Automatic detection of subtitle encoding for supported languages
- Improved and expanded font, subtitles and osd options
- Options for AC3 and DTS pass-through
- Internal video output support for multiple gui instances
- Better Fontconfig cache warning
- Fix going back to fullscreen on TigerSee all new features

"Excellent Video Player"
Version: MPlayer OSX Extended rev14
Pros
Great quality video, configurable, easy to use, free.
Cons
No WMV support. But I can live with that.
Summary
I'm new to Mac and have tried half a dozen or so video players for my AVI MKV, DivX and FLV files. Plays them all without issue. MPlayer OSX Extended is head and shoulders above the rest.

I downloaded this program to play an MKV video on my Mac. It worked even better than expected, with no lag at all and the audio perfectly synchronized. Excellent software!

"Crashfest"
Version: MPlayer OSX Extended rev13
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
It's doing what it always did, with a few exceptions.
Mplayer no longer plays mpgs, mp4s and such.
It just crashes when you forward, actually can't even be quit without a restart.
So the player I got years ago to get around the limitations of quicktime player, doesn't play quicktime files anymore. -
"Good solid media player"
Version: MPlayer OSX Extended rev13
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
As with a previous reviewer, my primary media app is QuicktimeX with Perian installed. The backup app until 18 months or so ago used to be VLC, when MPlayer OSX Extended came out I switched and have never looked back. It looks and works better as a Mac app, has opened everything thrown at it and has been solid.
The one gripe I had about it was that unlike other Mac media apps, hitting esc in full screen mode would close the media file instead of switching it to windowed mode. I am very happy that annoying anomaly has been fixed in this revision. The new look is very sleek and elegant as you would expect from a Mac app - I am really impressed.
Congratulations and thank you to the developer for such a great app, I haven't opened VLC in quite some time, I will now have it stop taking up drive space as there is no reason to use it while I have MPlayer OSX Extended. -
"An amazing OSX player that can play anything."
Version: MPlayer OSX Extended rev13
Pros
? Can play any video stream/container format I have thrown at it
? Can play any audio format I have tried
? Full support for internal/external subs (including Advanced SubStation Alpha)
? Plays 720p h264 videos with no dropped framesCons
? Still a few minor kinks to work out like going fullscreen in wrong "Space" sometimes
? Takes a long time to start playing videos shared over a LAN
? Playlist feature doesn't behave as expected (but who uses that anyway)Summary
This really is the king of a media players on the OS X Platform. In fact, I just might like it better than Media Player Classic, my favorite player for Windows. MP OSX Extended plays everything I throw at it seamlessly with no hiccups, no audio/video desynchronization, and no dropped frames. Better yet, my MacBook Pro doesn't turn into a hotplate capable of searing flesh ? an impressive feat for 720p h264 video.
Besides just being able to play video streams amazingly well, it also supports all those nice features that are included in standards, such as chapters for .mp4, that most players fail to take advantage of. It also supports multiple video, audio, and subtitle streams and *gasp* even lets you select the one you want. Also, as of revision 13, It was given a new skin so it looks better than any player with the exception of Quicktime X. (As I am writing this, the picture above doesn't match what it looks like now)
With out a doubt, this is the best media player you can get for OSX. If you have an Intel Mac running 10.5 or later, download it. You'll wonder how you got by without it.
Note: After installing, go to "Preferences >> General" and make sure "Automatically check for new updates" is selected. Every update just keeps making MP OSX Extended better and better. -
"a step backwards"
Version: MPlayer OSX Extended rev13
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Usability has taken a step backwards in my opinion. I do not like the new interface, and not simply talking about aesthetics. The time marker is very difficult to see. Additionally, and for me a giant annoyance is that if the displat window is closed, dragging a new vid file into the doc icon will not open the file in a new window as it always has done in the past. Don't find any noticeable improvement to offset these new negative features. -
"Very good!"
Version: MPlayer OSX Extended rev13

Really nice interface-rework in this version, great! Like it. Still the onscreen-display in fullscreen-mode cold need some rework, looks a bit clumsy compared to VLC or Quick Time, for example -
"Runs more formats than QT Player!"
Version: MPlayer OSX Extended rev12
Pros
This is a no-frills app but it will run formats that neither QuickTime Player, Real Player, nor VLC will play. And it's free!
Cons
Bare bones, but it's not a problem for me.

"Worked very well as soon as installation finished"
Version: MPlayer OSX Extended rev10
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I had already downloaded another program. It did not work at all. Then I opened my emaill from version Tracker and Voila! There this was: Mplayer OSX Extended for Mac OS X. I just bought this brand new Mac Book at the Apple Store. A friend sent me 2 wmv's to watch. Nothing on my Mac Book could play the videos, which happen to also be on Youtube. So, I did go there. But not being satisfied with not being able to view the downloads on my mac, I continued my search on the email and found this wonderful program. Abundant Gratitude to all involved in getting this to me thru Version Tracker.
Gratefully Yours, with Joy, Peace and
LOVE,
