Little Snitch informs you whenever a program attempts to establish an outgoing Internet connection. You can then choose to allow or deny this connection, or define a rule how to handle similar, future connection attempts. This reliably prevents private data from being sent out without your knowledge. Little Snitch runs inconspicuously in the background and it can also detect network related activity of viruses, trojans and other malware.

You can restrict an app's access to a network host or port or protocol permanently or temporarily. You can generalize a filter to all apps or all ports or all hosts. Critical apps are locked to avoid unintended network denial.
Cons
Unlike free ZoneAlarm Personal Firewall, there's no automatic intelligence, so you must design your own firewall. However, you won't be blindsided unless you do it to yourself. Little Snitch blocks outgoing network accesses only.
Summary
If you are fussy or like to tinker, you can spend a lot of time fine-tuning this application only to get disgusted and start over again. It's a mature program with nearly complete control over external network access. This kind of firewall reacts to network access by applications. If a new (different than those recorded before) access is attempted by an app, Little Snitch will pop up a dialog to allow you to decide whether to allow it. It is low profile - does not use much processor time. The list of filters can get large but is well organized and very easy to read and modify and there is a search feature in case the list becomes otherwise unmanageable. Little Snitch filtering can be completely suspended if desired. It has just the right number of features to be useful and flexible.

Easy to set up & use. Runs in background without slowing anything down. Puts me in control of who gets to use my info.

Don't know what it doesn't catch, of course. Sometimes sends duplicate alerts within seconds of each other.
