Satisfy your curiosity about which sites are linking to your site and your competitor's sites with this simple tool. However, don't expect a detailed analysis.
LinkSurvey's interface is plain, but still requires a trip to the Help file before getting started. Once you understand how to do it, actually performing the comparison is pretty easy. The split-paned interface is divided into three main sections, one for adding the domains or URLs you want to compare, one to display results, and a browser to view any of the sites returned in the results. There's a File menu and toolbar, but instead of a button or menu option, you have to right-click in the first section to bring up a window to add a site. Unlike some programs that let you add all of the sites you want to compare in one fell swoop, you'll have to right-click and select New for each domain or URL for which you want see links. The results are presented in a simple spreadsheet-style layout, with the sites you've selected shown at the top of the column and the found linking sites along the right. You can see at a glance the number of links and where there's any overlap. The trial version only displays the first 100 linking sites. You'll have the option of saving the results in several ways, including text, HTML, and Excel. There aren't any reports you can produce within the program, LinkSurvey merely pulls the link information from common search engines and presents them to you in one place.
You can launch the demo up to 30 times. Even with the minor demo restriction you still can get a good sense of LInkSurvey's capabilities and see if the information helps you understand more about your site and who's linking to it.
