    "interesting stuff... one problem"

    September 29, 2005   |   By ende

    Version: Linear Laundry 1.1.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
i really like this one. i tried "Raw To Linear PSD" and the Photoshop Action "Gentle Cycle" so far.

for those who haven't tried yet: "Raw To Linear" uses the open source command line tool "dcraw" to batch-convert raw images to a linear (and though really DARK) PSD file. it seems, that almost all third party raw-converters use dcraw (Adobe Camera Raw, ACDC, Raw Magick, Google Picasa, VueScan, Silverfast to name some popular). it converts almost all kinds of RAW images (list: http://www.cybercom.net/~dcoffin/dcraw/).

you can't interact with "Raw To Linear". it always uses the whitebalancing saved with the image.

then there are several photoshop-actions to apply curves, levels, hue/saturation to the image MOSTLY in a non-destructive way as layers.

the problem is, that some actions depend on the exact names of the layers which vary in the localizations of photoshop. BAD DESIGN, ADOBE! but this means, that the actions don't work unmodified in localized versions of photoshop. this is mainly adobes fault, though.

i like this bundle, because it is another approach to converting raw images. quite some times i had better results than with adobes camera raw. it is really good in preserving the highlights. but the conversion takes longer and the kind of required interaction if you want to tweak the result is much more complex. this gets even worse, if the image isn't white-balanced properly.

in future, i'll use this bundle if:
    a) the image is properly whitebalanced
    b) highlight-preservation with "adobe camera raw" is difficult.

in all other cases, i find ACR much more efficient.
