Back in the 1990s, the keywords meta element was an important part of Web design; putting the right keywords in this tag helped search engines properly index sites and, if done right, helped improve search rankings. Unfortunately, because it was so easy for unscrupulous site owners to add misleading keywords and create irrelevant search results, meta keywords have largely fallen out of favor with the major search engines. If you decide to use them anyway, Keywords Meta Tag Generator can help you analyze your content and select the best keywords for each particular page.

The program's interface is basic, consisting of a single screen full of check boxes and drop-down menus. Users load the HTML or PHP file they want to analyze and then decide how they want to weigh certain elements of the page during the analysis. For example, users may decide to increase or decrease the weight (and thus the importance) of anything on the page that's bold or italic. Users can also adjust the weight for elements found within table, div, and span tags, among others. Once users have customized the analysis, Keywords Meta Tag Generator scans the file and returns a list of keywords, already situated within a meta tag; users need only copy and paste the code into their file. Although we can't say whether this tool is actually useful in terms of improving search results, it does at least function as advertised, and its online Help file is well-written and thorough.

Keywords Meta Tag Generator is free to try, but has a 16KB input restriction and restricted output. The program comes as a ZIP file but installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users.

Keywords Meta Tag Generator in contrast to freeware keywords meta tag generators, which require you to select keywords, this program scans an HTML or PHP document, counting the number of occurrences of words and how they are used, and produces an appropriate keywords meta tag for the document. This can be inserted automatically into the file. The program ignores user-specified words and common words such as 'this', and the resulting keywords meta tag depends on user-specified weights assigned to boldface words, words within headings. The program also ignores anything in the body of the file which is within HTML tags, within comments or within SCRIPT or STYLE tags so it can be used with HTML files which use cascading style sheets, have lots of embedded javascript or were generated by some WYSIWYG web page creator. Supports EM, STRONG, DIV and SPAN tags. The program works with HTML files in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, as well as in English.
