This browser add-on protects your usernames and passwords from keyloggers, but its quirks limit its effectiveness. KeyScrambler Personal's small dialog box interface is invoked from a tray icon. This utility encrypts keystrokes at the kernel level. It's automatically invoked when it detects typing in select browser username and password input boxes. As you type your password, the program displays the random characters that a keylogger would detect, but the correct characters are entered. A hot key easily starts and kills the encryption, and the registered version encrypts other security fields such as credit card numbers.

Though advertised for Internet Explorer and Firefox, our testers gave up using the add-on in Firefox 2. The tray icon would not display unless IE was started. The floating display often disappeared during typing. Under Firefox, standard username input boxes wouldn't invoke KeyScrambler Personal. IE suffered from none of these problems. If you fear a keylogger is after your username and password and you use IE as your sole browser, this freeware encrypter will prove handy. Otherwise, look for a more robust utility.

"Works well, a must have"

December 20, 2008  |  By MrM4tt - skype

 |  Version: KeyScrambler Personal 2.2.1

Pros

Simple notification of new versions, quick to load, the bar can be repositioned to any of the four sides of the window, and shows you that it's working when typing information into a webpage. Does what it claims, and free - simply a must have.

Cons

Bug that would have the encrypted text entered into the webpage when the browser had bugs, not seen since. Does not support Google Chrome Beta.

"Nice try, though quite redundant"

December 19, 2008  |  By musicmagick

 |  Version: KeyScrambler Personal 2.2.1

Pros

It protects popular browsers like IE and Firefox against "keyloggers" by encrypting what you type so malware cannot read private or sensitive information, so it makes you feel "safe". Important note: this version is out of date: newest = v.2.3.0.1

Cons

first of all: it only protects you inside IE of Firefox, no other browsers, neither outside these browsers, unless you pay. Second remark: it slows down terribly the performance of your browser. Third remark: redundancy! Read my bottom-line summary.

Summary

OK, here we go: this KeyScrambler uses a lot of system resources, it eats too much memory and cpu-usage. When I type something in Firefox (like I do now) this fast and safe browser turns into a snail or even worse! My biggest remark is that KeyScrambler just makes you feel "safe" but in fact this piece of pay-ware (sure it is pay-ware, because only browser protection for free is not enough!) is completely redundant. If you have solid real-time protection (antivirus, alti-malware, good firewall, complete internet-security solution or other) you are more than enough protected against keyloggers and other fraudulent malware! And good real-time protection doesn't have to be expensive to be 'solid'. In fact there is more "very reliable real-time protection" for a cheap donation or even completely for free than you could ever think! Just take a good look around when you're surfing, or googling. Extend this with some freeware on-demand scanners that you can run regularly (at least once a week), stay up-to-date when it comes to antivirus- and antimalwaredefs so your database won't become outdated, and in no time you have a well-protected blockhouse instead of a dangerously unprotected pc or portable. But exaggeration won't do you any good, or won't protect you any better either, So imho KeyScrambler might be a nice play-thing to experiment with, but in reality quite unnecessary and not worth paying for.
