Version: Kaspersky Anti-Virus Definition Complete Update 02/10/2008
"Very powerful...so powerful that it morphs into an ungovernable monster!"
Pros: This anti virus program monitors absolutely everything your computer does. It's very interesting to see how many times your favorite, most trusted programs access remote websites to either get information or to report information based on your computer usage.
Cons: Ok, so it's powerful...that's not all good! This damn program reports so many events, giving you the option to allow it or disallow it that it's overwhelming. The information it gives regarding events that you must decide whether to allow or disallow is not enough to tell you what you should do. If you don't know EXACTLY what your computer is doing it and WHY it's doing it, how do you decide what to disallow? Guessing that something is happening that you want to prevent is very, very likely to cause your software programs to stop functioning. One program after another begins to shut down, lock up or just fail to launch.
Eventually, Kaspersky interferes with so many programs including Windows XP itself that you'll have to reload both Windows and most of your favorite software. This is truly Pandora's box! Maybe if you're a computer genius it'll work out ok for you. However, consider this:
My son owns several computer companies and has become a multi millionaire from them. He has many technicians with great training and numerous levels of certification. Several of them have seen the results of what Kaspersky Anti-Virus program on my very powreful computer and were surprised at the problems it created. Many of these problems were traced to changes in Window's Registry and, if you have any familiarity with Microsoft's Registry system of running Windows, you'll know it's a complete nightmare!
Frankly, I think I trust the average virus more than I trust Kaspersky! It's like the old joke about Harley Davidson motorcycles 50 years ago...."An expensive way to transport an oil leak."
Maybe Harley Davidson got their oil leak troubles fixed, but if you want your computer to keep on running, you should keep in mind that Kaspersky is an expensive way to screw your computer up without having to depend on a virus to do it for you.
