K9 is an email filtering application that works in conjunction with your regular POP3 email program and automatically classifies incoming emails as spam (junk email) or non-spam without the need for maintaining dozens of rules or constant updates to be downloaded. It uses intelligent statistical analysis that can result in extremely high accuracy over time. K9 learns from its mistakes and becomes better and better at being able to identify spam. More importantly it learns to recognize what you consider to be spam. K9 is for standard POP3 email accounts only. It does not directly support Hotmail, AOL or any other kind of webmail type systems, nor does it support SSL or secure authentication as used by MSN.

Pros
Rarely mis-identifies good email as Spam and almost never lets any real spam into your in-box. I've been using K9 since 2004 and I have no complaints about this program. Just keep training your K9 when the spammers try a new tactic and it will keep the spam out of your mailbox.

I like that it runs unobtrusively in the background.
Cons
The filters don't catch things labeled "SEXUALLY EXPLICIT" and other obviously spam-type email. I am teaching it, but it is taking a long time. Also it would be great if it could integrate with Thunderbird or other popular email programs instead of having to go to the K9 interface to select messages as Spam or Good.

Pros
Easy to configure and never have to worry about it afterwards. Correctly identifies spam (after learning) about 95% of the time and easy to identify those marked as spam that are not and re-direct K-9.
