K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is a collection of codecs, DirectShow filters and tools. Codecs and DirectShow filters are needed for encoding and decoding (playing) audio and video formats. It installs Classic Media Player which will play the files.

The installer installed 3 viruses before the K-Lite installer ever ran. 1 was a online backup vault, 2 was a media info tool for web browsers, and 3 was a quick easy saver of some sort. When checked they all popped as viruses, and are designated viruses by many online communities.
The codecs will not allow Mpeg-2 files to play in WMP for Win 7 which is what I wanted it for.
It completely messed up all media thumbnails. All my computer will display now is icons for the file type.Summary
Stay Away from version 9.8. It did install 3 verified viruses before the installer for K-Lite itself ever ran. I've used past versions of this, and it was great. However, now it doesn't do what it's supposed to do in anything except Media Player classic.

Easy to install using all the default settings. I was unable to play most video formats on my Acer Aspire One netbook with Windows 7 Starter. Those which did play often had no sound. Installing other codec packs cause squawking noises instead of sound. I installed you K-Lite Mega Codec Pack and now everything works perfectly. I haven't found a format to date which doesn't play correctly. I installed Media Player codec pack on my Windows Vista system which works fine but didn't work on the netbook. Now, with the Mega Codec Pack all is well.
Cons
I didn't understand the significance of all the settings options so I used the defaults and it works fine up to now.

I feel that I am bless with so much. This program allows me to play even dual-layer 8.5 gigabyte discs without the degradation of quality. As I sit here listening to my favorite music dual-layer DVD while typing this review, I feel like the speaker is right there in the same room as I am. The last I looked at the frame quality, it looks crisp and clear without jagged-edges. It is a miracle that this program is free.

I have used K-Lite before in two different versions with no problems, and the codec files work fine. However, I have to warn against installing V. 8.8. The file I downloaded as FFDshow installer contained malware. Specifically, the Funmoods toolbar. Even after I uninstalled the Funmoods toolbar, using IObit Uninstaller to uninstall and scan the registry, both IE and Firefox would freeze on the second page, necessitating a hard reboot. Spybot Search and Destroy located another malware file, and removed it, but I finally had to use System Restore to get rid of the mess Funmoods left behind it. It apparently changed the names of files and folders so neither browser could find them, so they froze.
Beware and be safe!Cons
The latest version has malware attached.
Summary
If you can't find an older version of K-Lite, you might want to avoid it entirely until the malware is wholly removed. Version 7 worked well, and was safe. Same of version 6.
