Jing Project makes grabbing screenshots and screencasts straight from your PC easy. You can then save the image files on your hard drive or share them on the Web. The happy yellow always-on app sits unobtrusively at the top of the screen and pops out three spokes, the left of which will produce crosshairs you can click and drag to define your capture area. When done, captures save as images or videos.

While Jing Project itself is free to download, the free trial of Screencast.com hosting service expires after 60 days; after that users will need to pay around $7 per month to store videos. Jing Project videos are not compatible with YouTube or other video-upload sites. While the screen-capture functions work as well as one expects from the makers of the excellent Snagit and Camtasia apps, the crosshairs capture method lacks some precision that may force you to redo the occasional screengrab.
