From Sun Microsystems :The Java 2 Runtime Environment (also known as Java Runtime or JRE) consists of the Java Virtual Machine, the Java platform core classes, and supporting files. It is the runtime part of the Java 2 Development Kit, but without the development tools such as compilers and debuggers. The Windows version of the JRE is packaged with the Java Plug-in, a software product that enables Web browsers to use JRE 1.2 to run 1.2 (Java 2)-based applets. Version 1.3.1_01a supports the APPLET tag for the launching of applets from Microsoft Windows platforms, as well as other enhancements which you can read about in the release notes.
