Summary
I could not find my photos anymore that I had put on a CD with Windows VISTA live. IsoBuster did a scan for missing files and folders and there they were again. Next I simply could "extract" the files to my HD. It was all very easy and straightforward. And fast. Next I tried it on a DVD that had been written with my older faulty DVD writer, of which I know that it writes discs that are hardly readable afterwards (a physical, drive vs. disc, problem). IsoBuster started drilling down to the data. This took a lot longer, but I happen to know this is due to the reader having issues with the written content. It's always this slow on these discs. After a while IsoBuster recovered 90% of the video on that disc. Wow, that was very impressive. With power DVD I could play the video now that I extracted to HD. Before it was not playable at all.

Summary
Program was unable to recover a data file from a physically undamaged but apparently corrupted DVD-R disc. I was hoping for something along fhe lines of GR's Spinrite but for DVD's, however this app (and perhaps all such) cannot do deep analysis on the disc. Instead, it simply gave out IO errors and offered either retries or filling bad file sectors with dummy data.
