Editors' review

Windows indexes your computer's files, folders, and drives to speed up searches, but to really exploit the power of indexing, you need a dedicated indexing and search tool, preferably one that's fast, powerful, and easy to use. Free would be nice, too. Index Your Files fits the job description. It searches by date, size, Boolean operators, file extension, and more. It finds stuff fast not only by filtering searches but also by searching only those indexed databases you specify. You can create and search as many databases as you need.

Index Your Files is easy to use, but we recommend spending a few minutes watching the Flash tutorial on the program's Web site, which you can access from the About menu as well as the program's Start menu folder. You'll also find documentation and assistance online, since the Help button only calls up a tabbed list of search instructions, which was certainly helpful but no substitute for a real Help file. We clicked the Index Menu tab and then the Add button. A pop-up let us create a database of indexed files by selecting folders to include or exclude, which can be whole drives or more; naming the database; scheduling updates; and clicking OK. We created several such databases, selected the checkbox for each, and clicked Index. The program quickly indexed the contents, displaying its progress. When it was finished, we returned to the Search tab. There we were able to both enter terms in the search field as well as select a wide range of file types and combinations from a drop-down menu. We selected JPG, checkmarked our databases, and clicked Search. Index Your Files very quickly displayed results in the main view by name, folder, extension, and more. We were able to select, open, copy, move, and delete files from the program's interface, and even export them to Excel. We really like the Preview window, which has a slider adjustment and can show specific preview types, such as images, thumbnails, or hex files.

Index Your Files does a lot for a free file searching tool. We'd like to see a proper Help file and more configuration options, but the program has an up-to-date look and feel and works well, and we recommend it without hesitation.

    "Fair but not great"

    July 05, 2014   |   By batsdude1

Version: Index Your Files - Home 5.0.2.6

    Pros

Does what it's supposed to, but that's all it does is finds.

    Cons

Too much like an explorer with no "teeth" to do anything else.

    Summary

After the test drive I deleted it. It finds things ok, but wouldn't let me go to anything, nor delete anything. I'll stick to Wise Jet search. It will open the files/folders, or delete them right from the search window.

    "Almost perfect"

    August 15, 2013   |   By dario.narducci

Version: Index Your Files - Home 5.0.2.6

    Pros

Quick, powerful, lots of options including text search within files. Preview panel is a plus.

    Cons

Not immediate. You have to go through the flash video at the site to understand how to use it. Also, you need to build specific indices to select folders

"Indexes .sql & .rdl files, which Microsoft W7 doesn't!"

    December 16, 2011   |   By SAinCA

Version: Index Your Files - Home 5.0.2.6

    Pros

T-SQL files and SSRS file CONTENTs are NOT indexed by Windows 7 Search - lamentable omission - but IYF Home does - EXCELLENT!

    Cons

    None so far.

    Summary

Copernic does index "specialty" files and I used it for years on other laptops, but for a quick and easy install-index-and-search this was a surprising success. With the demise of Google Desktop this is my recommended local file search tool.

"Excellent if you understand how to use it."

    December 08, 2011   |   By phunny96

Version: Index Your Files - Home 5.0.2.6

    Pros

Excellent program quickly and accurately indexes files for quick retrieval. You have to understand how to use program( its very easy there is a video walk through on the developers website.)I was able to quickly locate my pdfs and get a great view of them. The Preview window is re sizable so you can easily make the window large enough to get a good look at the file. Plus you can use the program direct from the preview panel for printing. I found it very easy to use and understand. I read a review by someone complaining about size of the preview window....IT"S A PREVIEW WINDOW!!! It's also adjustable in size. I think he/she is forgetting its and easy to use FREE program. It also kicks the snot out of windows indexing. So get a grip I have to go with the editor on this one and give it a five star rating!

    Cons

    It won't make my coffee.

    "finds little"

    May 08, 2011   |   By R-Mladek

Version: Index Your Files - Home 5.0.2.6

    Pros

    It is fast.
Worth the money (given that it's free).

    Cons

    Finds almost nothing.
    UI is cumbersome.
Preview pane too small for a notebook.

    Summary

I tested it on a folder with about 1000 files. It indexed it in about 3 seconds, but then only found about 3 keyword instances of the approximately 100 that I know are in the folder.
The preview pane then calls up the host program (in this case Adobe reader) but is so small that it practically useless on a monitor smaller than 1920 x 1200.
