"Better Netstumbler for Vista"
Version: InSSIDer 1.1.1.0318
Pros
Runs on Vista. Interesting graphics. Easy install.
Cons
Modification?
Summary
Used Netstumbler on XP for a long time but have gone mdern with Vista. I certainly can understand why a "free" download would not invest in porting to another OS, but since the guts of Windows 7 are going to be Vista, maybe a mind change is needed.
The product install easily and brings up an intuitive screen with logical windows. The graphical window is a great indicator of why your channel is so slow. I found a nearby b router drowing out the g signal which was farther away.
I tried other recommended Vista wireless display programs but couldn't get them to work. Thank goodness I didn't. -
"The best wi-fi scanning tool you can get"
Version: InSSIDer 1.1.1.0318
Pros
* Shows all networks in your area both graphically and in tabular form, with signal strength, channel, and security type
* Uses Windows API to access wireless data, which makes it more likely to work than NetStumblerCons
* None to note! This release fixes some minor bugs in the previous release (networks with low strength would show as infinitely powerful)
Summary
If you're looking to choose a channel to minimize interference from other wi-fi networks, or just scanning the area for wi-fi service you can use, inSSIDer is the bomb. Highly recommended!
