Version: ImTranslator Plugin for Internet Explorer 3

    "Adware, rough to use..."

by callrs on May 13, 2006

    Pros: TWO STARS

I tried the translator & conversion dictionary. Worked. Though I don't know what the quality of the translations are, my initial response was positive.

The manual, though lacking an index, seems neat & understandable enough, and welcoming of feedback. (But the font may be too small for some folks. It was small even after maxing out IE's Text Size feature).

Main Drawbacks: Intrusive with banners & message boxes; not as user-friendly as it should be:

LOCKED WINDOW SIZE: The Main, Back-Translation, Dictionary, and other windows are non-resizable. Authors appear to want us to almost literally squint to make any decent use out of this app. I have an 18" view. Why should you confine me to a tiny fraction of that? What good is the rest of the screen if I can't enlarge the windows to my comfort, ease, and enjoyment? It's like living in a castle but being confined to a dungeon. I have a large screen with high resolution for a panoramic view and high productivity. May I use it all?

Cons: NAUGHTY SPELL CHECK: At first it seemed nice & useful. But on digging deeper: --Slow to start vs. others such as Google's (see below for others). --Lacks auto-paste back into web edit box after the check. --Repeatedly pops up the same annoying unwanted message boxes! A user-friendly app does not bother us with countless message boxes, but finds some elegant way to fulfill the user's wishes. Even a single popup is too much if it's unduly intrusive, and this app goes overboard to annoy us: "Warning: The free service is able to..." "There are spelling errors...Would you like to...correct them?" "You have chosen a word...not found...Do you want to...?" "Would you like to continue translation?"...

--Marks urls as errors, even with the "Ignore Internet and file addresses" option set! --1000 byte limit, but the website doesn't mention this. Had to install, run, play with it. Then by accident finally did discover the catch to it being "free". Such burdensome holding-back 'til we give it a whack is just not trustworthy nor user-friendly. --Two ad banners each 470 x 20 pixels, holding about 30% height and full window width. Website doesn't mention these either. Didn't pay attention to them at first. But one banner became REALLY annoying after a short while with bright flashing colored ads urging you to "BUY A CARD" etc. That did it. Enough is enough. I was ready to test the app out some more, but now I shed this pest for good.

    Need a decent spell check for edit-boxes? Try: Google's SpellCheck (F,I), ieSpell.com (I), Aspell (F,O,+,S), SpellBound (F,S). Jazzy (J,S) is client/server as are: WBOSSC (UL) [w...dontpokebadgers.com], Ispell (UL,+) [h...://lasr.cs.ucla.edu/geoff/ispell.html], IT Lab Spellcheck (+) [w...itlab.musc.edu/spellcheck/],

    Emil's Chronicle DHTML Spell Checker (F,I) [h...://me.eae.net/stuff/spellchecker/demo.html],

    spell.vbs: (I,+) [h...://pcnineoneone.com/tweaks/scripts8.html (cf: tpcIQ's WBSC)].

    Key: I-IE, F-Firefox, O-Opera, J-Java, UL-Unix/Linux, +-Multi use, S-At Sourceforge.net

Pros: If you aren't goin to discuss modern literature it's a very convenient translator , i tested spanish and russian and it worked perfectly . And don't forget , it's free !

Cons: I wish they included more 'smaller' languages like italian or polish .
