Publisher's description

From ICONIX :

Tired of trying to figure out which email messages might be phishing or fraudulent spam? Iconix eMail ID lets you see what's real before you even open the message. Iconix eMail ID works with your current email service such as AOL mail, AIM mail, Yahoo mail, Windows Live Hotmail, Gmail, Earthlink, Outlook Express (all on IE or FireFox). Iconix eMail ID double checks the source of a message to make sure it's not a spoof. It then uses a simple visual indicator in your inbox--a gold lock with a checkmark to show that a message is real. E-mail from over 300 major senders is currently identified--companies such as eBay, PayPal, Citibank, Amazon.com, Expedia, MySpace, and the New York Times represent the top online sites for retail, travel, auctions, banking, e-cards, news/entertainment, and dating.

Version 3.60.1 adds support for Fire Fox 3.

    "A good first step..."

by kpinkert on August 7, 2008

Pros: This software works well and with most email. It is an attempt to eliminate phishing emails. Right now, there are about 300 companies that are validated. Ebay and Paypal are among them. Paypal now has a link to this software and recommends using it. If you find a vendor that either is not on the list or the emails are not being flagged as trusted, you can go to the iconix web site and send either the www address or the email@ address. The form does not say anything directly about sending an email, but it will accept it.

When you first install it, it takes awhile to build up a database and it does this over the internet. So be patient and wait for the validation check boxes to show up... Once it has been initialized, it is supposed to work faster.
