IP Scanner for Mac

Publisher's Description

From 10base-t Interactive:

IP Scanner for the Macintosh displays all machines, users & IP numbers of Macintosh users on your local network. It also detects some non-Macintosh devices, and in many cases can even identify the manufacturer of the device.

IP Scanner uses Bonjour (the technology formerly known as Rendezvous) to collect realtime user information as well as IP data from Macintosh machines on a local area network and sorts everything in tidy columns, each machine's IP number displayed next to its name (along with the current username of the person logged in to that machine). For small network admins, this means no more shouting around the office to find out who has which IP or, conversely, who is sitting at which workstation in a fixed IP network. Screenshots and more info at http://10base-t.com

Registration: IP Scanner is free for individual users. Using it on a network with more than 5 devices requires a shareware license of $29.99, which entitles you to export and printing functions, tech support, feature requests, and a chance to win a dream date with Paris Hilton.

    "Crippleware"

    May 23, 2011  |   By DurocShark

    Version: IP Scanner 2.50

    Pros

I suppose it works, but with it being crippled, it's darn near useless.

    Cons

    Crippleware SUCKS.

    Summary

Don't bother. To get the real functionality it's $30.

    "OK utility"

    March 10, 2011  |   By osos10

    Version: IP Scanner 2.50

    Pros

Easily shows 6 devices on the net (wireless or wired).

    Cons

For more than 6 you need to pay - on App Store it costs $10.

    Summary

$10 is still more than its worth since there is not much that you can do but to see and get some limited info about the machines on the net. In particular it doesn't tell you if those devices are actually active ...

    "Free version is a disappointment"

    February 22, 2011  |   By wfdickjr

    Version: IP Scanner 2.50

    Pros

It does seem to find devices on the network.

    Cons

The five device limit on the free version severely cripples this program both in its role as a "free" program and as an evaluation vehicle for potential buyers.

    Summary

Others will have their own opinion, of course, but for my purposes, this was a disappointment. To begin with, I was disappointed with the installation which seemed to be little more than unpacking into the download folder. Then the five-device limit meant I couldn't get past the lower-numbered IPs to find out how well it identified more arcane devices like IP phones, etc. If I can't do that, where is my incentive to spend $30 to upgrade? If I am really desperate for an IP scanner, I can always leverage my investment in VMWare and Boot Camp to run one of the many free PC-based IP scanners. Or I can remote desktop to a PC or server to do it. Yes, I would be willing to spend $30 for an IP scanner that relieved me of the need to flip over to a PC - but not when I have no better trial than this.

"Mac Lifesaver for IP camera hook up"

    April 21, 2010  |   By chargescenic

    Version: IP Scanner 2.50

    Pros

    IT WORKS!!!

    Cons

Nobody seems to know about it. I would have saved hours if only I had known.

    Summary

Purchased a PC IP camera for my Mac. All I had to do was hook it up and find the IP address to the camera. Sounded simple. After 2 days of frustration I was ready to give up. Out of the blue I stumbled on to your site and tried the download. Worked immediately. Had the camera running in minutes. If there was a way to find what devices were running on my Mac, I never found it. IP Scanner 2.50 works great a must for Mac users.

    "I'm happy with this"

    February 26, 2009  |   By jdrake777

    Version: IP Scanner 2.33

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
program, works as advertised. I've used it on 2 G4 FW800 one running 10.4.11 the other 10.5.6 and now it's running on a Mac Mini, 1.83 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo also running 10.5.6.
My only wish is that we'd be able to see the info on more than 5 items, it's showing 15 items found on my network but only the first 5 have any information showing.

    "More info from my router"

    October 20, 2008  |   By GNJ

    Version: IP Scanner 2.33

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I thought this might be a quicker way to check who is connected to my network ---- info I can get in real time from my wireless router at any time with my browser.

    It doesn't even do that.

Doesn't see beyond my router (or even into the router). It doesn't see anything but my Mac and the router. A DSL Modem, a printer and two other PC's are on the network. Apparently, (i'm guessing here because I did not pursue it any further) the companion IP Broadcaster needs to be installed ---??

"IP Scanner is an excellent tool..."

    November 18, 2006  |   By FalstaffA

    Version: IP Scanner 1.7.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
...for network administrators like me, as well as, for all Mac users who are interested in knowing the particulars (i.e., connected devices, specific IP assignments, etc.) of their networks. Version 1.7.1, which was released just two days after V 1.7, quickly resolved the issue that prevented some routers (Linksys in my case) from being displayed on the device(s) list, now every single device that I have connected to my network, both wired and wireless, is detected. Kudos to the developers (Mark, Paul, Eric, etc.) not only for creating this excellent tool, but also for quickly patching up and improving the previous release(s). Concerning the shareware license fee, perhaps offering a tiered fee schedule (e.g., $15.00 for up to eight devices and $25.00 for more than eight) would make it easier for potential registered users to be convinced to pay for this tool.

    "The Best Mac IP Scanner!"

    October 9, 2006  |   By Bill Dawson

    Version: IP Scanner 1.7

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I see a lot of complaints that there isn't something cheaper. (It's only $25!)

I see a lot of complaints that there aren't more choices. (Write your own!)

Actually there ARE a lot of alternatives. Not as many as on Windows, but then there aren't as many Mac users. Get over it. You can always pay 3 times as much for IPNetMonitorX which doesn't work as well. Or get one of a dozen freeware apps that require respnders on everything.

What I don't see are serious reviews. This product does what it says it does and it does it very well.

As a network administator I use it all the time. It shows me addresses of DHCP devices faster than I can log into my router's own utility and exposes unauthorized changes and additions to our wired and wireless networks.

It finds printers, routers, Macs, PCs, bridges, ad-hoc devices, even Tivo!

With the new any-subnet addition it will be the perfect tool for administering even large corporate networks.

I don't see any reason to give this less than 5 stars and look forward to it's continued development.
