From ICQ:
ICQ Lite has all the essential features of the full version of ICQ. You can message people, exchange files, send SMS messages, and meet people. It also includes multilingual support, the ability to save your chat histories, and a typing indicator that shows when a contact is typing you a message. In addition to familiar features such as chat, SMS messaging, and file-transfer capabilities, the newest version includes ICQ Xtraz, which allow you to send personalized greeting cards, apply custom icons to your buddies, play online games, and customize your shortcuts panel for one-click access to all your favorite features. The ICQ Xtraz platform enables ICQ to present users with a selection of new services as they are created, without the need for you to download a new client. Xtraz also supports the creation of new ICQ features that can be built separately from the core ICQ client and then delivered and automatically updated over time. The new interface also is clean and intuitive, so you can start chatting quickly and easily.

"Bad actor..."
Version: ICQ 4 8.1
Pros
As a chat tool, it's fine.
Cons
It really wants to install stuff behind your back. My Windows 7 install came with 3 ZoneAlarm pieces - and no warning or option to avoid. I used ICQ years ago, when it was hard to delete. Hopefully that's changed - deleting right now.
Summary
ZoneAlarm is a fine product in its own right. But it's wrong to install software without approval.

"Beware Spyware and Changes to your Browser."
Version: ICQ 4 7.7
Pros
Uninstalled minutes after installing.
Cons
Spyware/Malware
Summary
Might be great software but I uninstalled it after it changed my browser settings.
-
"DO NOT INSTALL ICQ"
Version: ICQ 4 7.5
Pros
the chat client "works" if you know anyone else with it.
Cons
ICQ is no longer the good chat client it used to be. This company will now try to push other products and services on you and your PC. Removal is near impossible and the company will NOT help you to do so. This service will try to take over your pc.
Summary
ICQ has become a VIRUS-like program set out to not help you communicate but instead make huge attempts for you to buy CRAP. It will change all the preference settings on all your browsers and when you change them back it wont be long before this service will do it again. Also somehow draining large amounts of PC resources. The ICQ company will not help you to remove and simply add/remove programs wont work. If you are looking for that old ICQ it used to be...sorry you wont find it. Do not install this program!!! How it gets past the virus protection is beyond me but it does not serve in your best interest. Note: During installation it did ask me if I wanted to custom install, giving the impression it will not install the "toolbar" and "web-browser settings", however it will ANYWAY. By definition this product and service is a VIRUS.

"ICQ 7.5 Is Really an Improved Version"
Version: ICQ 4 7.5
Pros
Logon with either your user number, email address or ICQ handle. Connect to friends on other social networks. No need bother with plugins anymore because they are now standard. Can invite more network friends than ever.
Cons
Have to switch to custom install to opt out of the ICQ search bar and other vendor extras. Not enough U.S. friends on ICQ to start up every time Windows boot up. Also can seem useless to a fast user if he/see gets stuck.
Summary
ICQ 7.5 is better finally after all the experimental versions. I was about to dump it completely a few days ago when I couldn't update my logon email. But then I discovered I had to verify any new email first. So if ICQ can update my logon email, then it is certainly better than the old versions. In those, starting a new account was the only way I knew how to update something. Deleting a photo to protect my privacy is an example. So ICQ is simply better, and also it is better at tracking my friends.

"Once in your computer,it NEVER leaves"
Version: ICQ 4 7.2
Pros
Works ok, but not nearly as crisp and clean sounding as Skype (the free version).
Cons
I can NOT get this off my computer - more tentacles than the old AOL! Even when I pull it off, it puts itself back on. According to my computer search, it does not exist, and hence cannot be erased. Outside of a computer wipe, I am stuck
Summary
DO NOT DOWNLOAD! Once you do, you own it, or it owns you, forever.

"It works, but is very invasive."
Version: ICQ 4 7.2
Pros
Its free, (Well no financial charge)
Cons
Take over too much of your PC and is quite difficult to clean out. Its not a case of try and remove if you don't like it. Bits hang in there.
Summary
I've had less trouble with a virus. To me this looks like a hijack and spyware cocktail with a bribe of reasonable chat software attached. I don't need it and have got rid of it (I hope)

"Poor, do not use"
Version: ICQ 4 7.2
Pros
It seems to work
Cons
1) Intrusive advertising some of which is questionable for children
2) Takes over Firefox, resetting lots of things including search engineSummary
There are loads of better options
-
"Just bloody awful!!!"
Version: ICQ 4 7.2
Pros
It seemed to work as an IM client.
Cons
This download is VERY invasive. I did a custom install, and it still installed a bunch of crap on my computer that I absolutely did not want on there. I still can't get icq search out of my Location bar search in Firefox. It's driving me nuts!
Summary
DON'T DOWNLOAD!!! I hate it when companies offer a program, and then sneak a bunch of invasive crap on your computer. It took me a while to get most of the junk off of my computer, but I still can't get icq search out of my Location bar search in Firefox. I've just come to the grim realization that I'll probably have to uninstall and then reinstall Firefox. So if you want a crappy program that'll mess with your system settings, and make it virtually impossible to remove completely, this is the chat client for you! If not avoid like the plague (highly recommended)!!!
TLDR: it works, but installs a bunch of invasive crap on your system that is very difficult to get off.
P.S. I rarely take the time to write these things, but icq crap always popping up on my computer after I've tried to scrub it clean has just driven me up the wall so friggin much, that I wish this plague upon no one else, and I want this piece of crap company to go the way of the dodo. -
"Does not work on all the networks it claims to."
Version: ICQ 4 7.2
Pros
This worked better than all the other multi-network messengers I have tried.
Cons
Although I gave my Google Talk log in details to connect to Google Talk network the messenger would not let me call any of my contacts there, not even when I typed in their user names. This put me off of this messenger right away.
Summary
ICQ claims to work with all networks but it does not. As mentioned above I could not connect to Google Talk even though I gave my log in for my account there. An all in one messenger is supposed to show all of your contacts on all accounts you are connected to when you log into it. But this did not, I could only call my contacts on Aim messenger and to my surprise the video messenger worked and I found I could have a video chat with my Aim Messenger friend from ICQ messenger. But ICQ did not display my contact list and there was no settings to find them on,even when I typed their names in the search box,I could not find them. Also I do not like the high security form you have to fill in to open an ICQ account. True the video messenger worked but ONLY with my Aim contact, nothing else. that is Why I will never use a multi network messenger,I would rather download,Google Talk and Aim and use those two reliable messengers or even a third like Windows Live. it is better to have 3 different messengers that work rather than one that does not. I think multi network messengers are a waste of time and do not work. So as for this messenger,ICQ,I have now uninstalled it from my laptop.
ICQ is a copy cat of aim Messenger but not very well done. You can sign into ICQ with your Aim account but it does not work well is not user friendly and nothing like the excellent Aim Messenger. Forget ICQ and get Aim Messenger instead.

"ICQ is ICQ and it works for me."
Version: ICQ 4 7.2
Pros
It works. It's stable. I can't ask for more
Cons
I haven't figured out how to change the color of the font in the windows. The pale yellow against the green is almost invisible to me.
Summary
I know there are other messenger programs. I have friends overseas who are all familiar with ICQ and we use it to chat all the time. It's easy to send attachments and the interface is fairly intutive. I haven't had any trouble withy it although it seems there are a lot of friend invitations from "hot single women" when I chat with a Russian friend. I haven't used the voice chat feature so I can't comment on that. I know many of my US friends no longer use it, preferring the likes of Yahoo, MSN, and facebook Chat. Still, as long as i have friends in other countries, I will continue to use it.
