This Firefox add-on gets you back to the first Web page you visited after closing the original tab, though it really doesn't enhance your Web surfing experience.

How'd I Get Here has no interface, but instead adds a button on your browser window. Unlike the standard Back navigation button, the program simply stores browsing information and allows you to go back to the first page of a site, even after clicking a link, launching a new tab, and closing the original site from which you started.

The program performed well and is effective in leading us back to our starting page. Although it isn't much different from the History button, it does offer one-click toolbar access as opposed to menu selection. Overall, How'd I Get Here isn't exactly a must-have, but since it didn't interfere with other plug-ins, used minimal resources, and is free, we think Firefox surfers may find this simple toolbar's accessibility convenient.

Publisher's description

From Jesse Ruderman :

Use this extension to go to the page on which you first clicked a link to the current page. For example: Go "back" even after opening a link in a new tab and closing the original tab. Remember how you found a site you bookmarked yesterday. When you are sent a link you have already seen, astound the sender by responding with a statement more precise than "I saw that on some blog a few days ago".

CNET Editor's Note: The Download Now link will prompt a local download of the Firefox extension. To install the extension directly, open the file using your Firefox browser.
