This pop-up blocker provides a few extra niceties beyond its main function. During our tests, Hitware Companion stopped all standard pop-ups with no problem, though similar to many of its competitors, it can't deal with banner or Flash ads. You will find a whitelist for allowing ads, but you can't let one through on the fly via a simple hot-key combo. The application alerts you whenever it quashes an ad by flashing or emitting a sound, but the absence of a log file is a curious oversight. In addition to its primary job, the program protects your privacy by deleting cookies, temporary Internet files, and Web-browsing history. It also cleans traces from various locations in Windows and wipes your tracks from certain applications, such as Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Word. We were pleased to find a tool for immediately closing all browser Windows, though it a shame we could never get it to work. Hitware Companion is by no means perfect, but it still makes a decent pick for most casual Web surfers.
