It helps protect your privacy by masking your IP address with an alias, but the demo version's trial restrictions make it hard to test all of this application's functionality.
Hide My IP 2008's initial interface lets you choose how often you want to change your IP address. You also have the options of launching the program at start-up, clearing any cookies once the IP changes, and requesting a U.S. IP. But this is where we encountered the first of many trial restrictions; with the exception of requesting a U.S. IP, the other options are disabled in the demo version. More advanced settings let you choose which Web browser you want to use to enable the program. There is also the choice of where you want the program to locate the alternate IP address. But once again, its not available during the trial. When we clicked the hide IP button, the program quickly changed our IP address. But thanks to those pesky trial restrictions, users are only allowed one alternate IP per trial. There is a sacrifice in surfing speed, and some testers reported that Web browsers ran incredibly slow when using the alias IP.
A Help menu isn't included. Hide My IP 2008 can mask your real IP address, but there's a possible sacrifice in browser speed, and no way to see if the additional settings and features work. We suggest you try other more fully-functional demo versions before making your decision on which one to buy.

Version: Hide My IP 2009 4.0.12.25645
"Browser didn't work. Gave a Houston, TX IP address."
Pros: Zero Stars
Cons: Cable internet only response to my IP address. I uninstalled it and the process took a little more than it installed. Firefox ran in background. Closed and booted in safe mode. I had to uninstall my Firefox browser and install my back-up registry.
Summary: When your browsers don't work. Your given a Houston,TX IP address. Then something shows up in my recycle bin. "Dc100" file. I found out that's WINNT. So, your IP address is known and you uninstall. After uninstall, you have to prepare your system. ... read more >>

Version: Hide My IP 2009 4.0.12.25645
"Sporadic, slow, poor support"
Pros: When it does work, it ain't to bad
Cons: It's down a lot. The premium service isn't worth it unless you absolutely need a country specific IP, but then that's likey to be down as well when you most need it. I think they have one employee named Doug who isn't very helpful.
