It helps protect your privacy by masking your IP address with an alias, but the demo version's trial restrictions make it hard to test all of this application's functionality.
Hide My IP 2008's initial interface lets you choose how often you want to change your IP address. You also have the options of launching the program at start-up, clearing any cookies once the IP changes, and requesting a U.S. IP. But this is where we encountered the first of many trial restrictions; with the exception of requesting a U.S. IP, the other options are disabled in the demo version. More advanced settings let you choose which Web browser you want to use to enable the program. There is also the choice of where you want the program to locate the alternate IP address. But once again, its not available during the trial. When we clicked the hide IP button, the program quickly changed our IP address. But thanks to those pesky trial restrictions, users are only allowed one alternate IP per trial. There is a sacrifice in surfing speed, and some testers reported that Web browsers ran incredibly slow when using the alias IP.
A Help menu isn't included. Hide My IP 2008 can mask your real IP address, but there's a possible sacrifice in browser speed, and no way to see if the additional settings and features work. We suggest you try other more fully-functional demo versions before making your decision on which one to buy.

Version: Hide My IP 2009 4.2.4.17423
"Overall an excellent product"
Pros: Quite easy to use...effectively switches IP addresses on demand, can encrypt connection as well. Has many IPs to switch around within, some foreign and some US. Can limit IPs to US only if desired. Can setup shortcut key combo to switch IP.
Cons: IPs sometimes lock up, but this is very occasional. Biggest issues come when you want to encrypt the connection, as I've had to cycle through several IPs to get one that would work. This is b/c not all IPs support encryption...not a big issue.
Summary: I have used this version for almost a year now, and overall, I've been pleased with this software. It's about $30 a year to use, but they manage all IPs for you, so you don't need to download lists or anything. The trial is pathetic, since the IPs... read more >>
