Editors' Review

Even in this day of BitTorrent and streaming Web video, FTP retains an important role in transferring files on the Net. Potential downloaders should take care, however--this software is aimed at computer users who want to set up an FTP server inside their networks, not at ordinary FTP users who simply want to transfer files. It does that task well, with a welcoming interface and a smooth installation process. It offers network administrators tight control over an FTP server's operations, with the power to limit connections by IP address, and to limit download speeds and transfer rates. Each individual IP address can be customized, with privileges such as a high or low priority in downloads and uploads. Despite this, we would have liked to see a bit more password-based security to keep out unauthorized users. However, on the whole this is an appealing choice for administrators who want to set up a basic FTP site.

"Robust and useful, with all the features for a simple FTP server."

September 15, 2006  |  By Juan Miguel Corral Cano

 |  Version: GuildFTPd 0.9.1

Pros

I had no idea on how to make an FTP server. I installed it, followed the steps of the useful Quick Start Guide, and now I have a robust FTP server in my network. And totally free!

"Easy to set up, with all the features you want"

September 06, 2006  |  By djcaseley

 |  Version: GuildFTPd 0.9.1

Pros

Its got user and user-group management, with dozens of options for each. Its got plug-ins. Its got security. Its got a step-by-step guide to setting up a simple FTP server. Perfect for the home user wanting to share some files across the network or internet.

Cons

Occassionally, it doesn't recognise the admin user's priviledges. The log file appears to be kept in memory - too many in one day, and you'll grind to a halt. Occassionally, FTP GUI clients don't understand it, and you have to revert to command-line. Not for the corporate user.

"[V0.999.14]A free FTPD with enough functionality."

August 29, 2006  |  By vinixwu

 |  Version: GuildFTPd 0.9.1

Pros

It's free, and it offers full funtionalities like group/user management which is included only in the retail/pro version of other similar products.

Cons

The GUI can be furhter improved.

Ex: The log can be displayed together rather than tagged view.

Since it's still in alpha, some functions may not operated as predicted. Hope 1.0 beta could be better :)

"Beware! Hammer/banning protection doesn't work"

August 22, 2006  |  By jgood4u

 |  Version: GuildFTPd 0.9.1

Pros

I will agree with almost all of the positive reviews for this product. It's easy, and free! BUT...(see my cons)

Cons

The autoban/hammering features don't work! I have used this over several years wan would like to continue too, but when I get hammered by 100,000 attempts in a day to guess the login, the system keeps that log in RAM, RAM fills up and the whole computer slows to a near stop until you delete/rename that log file. I have contacted the developers with details and log copies, but while they admit that it is a failure, they otherwise blew me off and locked the discussion group topic. Email directly to "Nitro" goes unanswered. It could be a good product, but if someone guesses your password, you could be hosed big time. And even if they don't guess it, your server/PC comes to a screaching crawl. Too bad they won't take it seriously after months of trying to discuss it with them.

"It works and it's easy to use"

July 14, 2005  |  By srcollins77

 |  Version: GuildFTPd 0.9.1

Pros

I tried several trial versions of ftp products available from Download.com and found most of them to be frustrating. This one, however, was very easy to set up and use. Basically, I was just looking for any easy way to allow a colleague to retrieve files via ftp from my computer and this did the trick.
