Editors' Review

In slightly more than a year, Google Chrome has surprised users and critics alike by leapfrogging to more than 4 percent of the browser market share. That attention and heavy usage is not undeserved. Chrome 4 is blazingly fast, more stable than previous versions, and introduces support for extensions, bookmark syncing, and some HTML5 innovations.

Based on Webkit, the same open-source engine that powers Apple Safari, Google's Android mobile platform, and several other Web-browsing tools, but with a different JavaScript engine, Chrome's interface is a drastic departure from other browsers. Instead of the traditional toolbar, Chrome puts its tabs on top. Moreover, the tabs are detachable: "tabs" and "windows" are interchangeable here. Detached tabs can be dragged and dropped into the browser, and tabs can be rearranged at any time. By isolating each tab's processes, when one site crashes, the other tabs do not.

The search box and the address bar have been fused into a hybrid "Omnibox," which includes suggestions for URLs culled from your browser's history and search suggestions from your search engine. It remembers site-specific search engine results. There's also Application Shortcuts, a feature that lets you create desktop icons for Web-only applications, such as Gmail. The stealth mode, Incognito, lets you surf without the history-recording cookies.

Despite all that's good and new in the browser from Google, it is still a work in development and users are not universally enthralled with Chrome's sheen. Complaints ranging from secure log-in issues to occasional site rendering hang-ups to support for PDFs and some media players. Problems aside, Chrome is more than a surface polish and is well worth using.

"Chrome is almost there"

April 20, 2010  |  By jmhx7

 |  Version: Google Chrome 4.1.249.1045

Pros

It's fast but not as fast as opera and safari (I'm seeing reviews that say it's the fastest and it's not true- opera currently has that title). It looks really nice and has some really nice skins.

Cons

There isn't an option or extension for autoclosing the download bar after downloading something. Could use more software plugins like firefox has.

Summary

Still not as complete a browser as firefox is yet.

"The future of Browsing."

April 19, 2010  |  By PulSamsara

 |  Version: Google Chrome 4.1.249.1045

Pros

Lightweight, minimalist yet powerful. Fantastic interface design.

Cons

Still building a few features. I'm waiting for 'favorites' to come out of it's seamingly 'Alpha' phase.

Summary

This Browser is a must. A joy to use everyday.

It's powerful yet it gets out of the way and lets the internet work.

"Fast But Needs Improvement"

April 17, 2010  |  By moviegeek65

 |  Version: Google Chrome 4.1.249.1045

Pros

Fast, Secure

Cons

Incompatible with some websites, Lacks Features, Downloading a program is tedious.

Summary

Chrome is the fastest and most secure browser there is right now, it runs in a sandbox so your OS is safe.
That being said it can be improved. Chrome needs a print preview feature and the ability to customize the toolbar. Downloading programs is tedious because you have to click on several buttons to get it on your PC. I also wish there was a cache limiter like IE has.

"In a State of Conflict"

April 15, 2010  |  By RMax304823

 |  Version: Google Chrome 4.1.249.1045

Pros

Attractive layout.

Cons

Incompatible with one of the other three browsers installed. Acted erratically and had to delete from Add/Remove on Control Panel.

Summary

Maybe if it's used alone or with one or two selected browsers, it might work well. As it was, I couldn't use it. No reason for others not to try it though.

"Thought it looked ugly but hey, this is good!"

April 14, 2010  |  By billkjung

 |  Version: Google Chrome 4.1.249.1045

Pros

Simple and nice UI (At first I did not like but after 3 days I don't look back)
Far more stable than IE, FF, Safari for Win.
Help site is very nice and well organized
Nice extensions that is useful (not for looking good)

Cons

Not good looking themes yet. (for this FF is better)
Focuses too much on functionality/performance that it seems to miss some other aspect. (We humans look for something else, we're not from Star Trek)

Summary

For me this was the most stable browser (and of course the fastest).
Even the 'then-looked-ugly UI" seems to be very clean and effective after using it for a while.
Also found nice addons that fits my necessity.
Also the way "Help" is presented was really good.

"Worst Browser ever, Uninstalled by second day!"

April 14, 2010

 |  Version: Google Chrome 4.1.249.1045

Pros

Nothing, New UI to learn

Cons

No Menu Bar

Summary

When you go to the help forum to try to find out how to restore the traditional menu bar you get this answer: Chrome does not have a traditional menu bar: File, Edit, Bookmarks, etc, and never will. Then they have the arrogance to tell you if you don't like it don't use it. I took the last statement to heart and uninstalled it immediately.

"Much better browser than I thought it would be."

April 13, 2010  |  By mrardin

 |  Version: Google Chrome 4.1.249.1045

Pros

It is faster than IE8 which got to be so frustratingly slow. The "Find" function on a page is great. Like the integration of Google Translate with the browser as I do much international correspondence. Am using Chrome primarily now.

Cons

Doesn't allow you to select and print selected text. Am still not satisfied with Roboform's integration and hope this quickly improves. It is so easy to use in IE and Firefox. Would also like more options to control its features.
