Editors' review

Those using Safari may want to add features to the browser for easier use. While Glims for Mac does add some useful features, not everything worked in our test, lessening the app's usefulness.

Glims for Mac is available for free as an add-on to Apple's Safari Web browser. The program downloaded and installed easily to the browser, and only required a program restart to take effect. Once installed, the program brings the user to a page containing tutorials and other information on its use. The tutorial was helpful and contained explanations of the different options available. The program does not have any menu of its own, but instead works in the background during Safari browsing. The preferences menu for the add-on has useful options available, including turning on and off images for searches, among other features. You can also change your preferred main search engine. The add-on did not alter the overall speed of the browsing experience. While many of the features worked well during our testing, the one to add thumbnail images to the search results did not function, which was a disappointment.

While not everything worked as promised, Glims for Mac may provide enough useful features to appeal to some users who want more from their Safari experience.

Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of Glims for Mac 1.0.39.

"Not functional with Safari 6.1 or 7.0 beta"

    October 02, 2013   |   By zunipus

    Version: Glims 1.0.39

    Pros

Once I figured out how to customize Glims and add my own search settings, I fell in love with this thing. It's excellent! The additions it makes to Safari are terrific. As long as you don't go past Safari v6.0.5, you'll find Glims to be a terrific addition to Safari.

    Cons

It is not compatible with Safari 6.1 or 7.0 beta (OS X Mavericks). Apparently Glims is now abandonware. I and several other people have provided MacHangOut.com with bug reports. The developer has not responded. The compatibility notes provided by the developer indicate that they have not specifically tested Glims with recent or upcoming versions of Safari. This means Glims is now legacy software not worth even trying past Safari 6.0.5.

    Summary

If you're using Safari 6.0.5 or earlier, you'll find Glims works great and offers terrific features. The ability to customize search engines is amazing, once you get the hang of how to do it. I did and have provided several new setups to use on the net.

HOWEVER, Glims apparently is abandonware. The developers, MacHangOut.com, have not responded to the many bug reports sent to them regarding incompatibility with Safari 6.1 and Safari 7.0 beta. Nothing has been provided at the developer's website that indicates any testing or compatibility with modern versions of Safari.

The incompatibility with Safari 6.1 and 7.0 beta is profound to the point of making Safari NON-functional. Don't even bother trying Glims with these or newer versions of Safari as the mess created is difficult and annoying to remove. I've tested with entirely clean installs of Glims with entirely terrible results.

As abandonware, I sadly can no longer recommend Glims, unless you're staying with Safari 6.0.5 or Safari 5. I hope this situation changes, but at this time nothing indicates that it will. :-(

    "Adds much needed functionality"

    September 15, 2013   |   By iMacMike

    Version: Glims 1.0.39

    Pros

    Fixes Safari's goofy tabs layout
Adds unlimited number of search engines

    Cons

Nothing major from what I've seen. Adds about 100Mb to Safari's RAM usage.

    "Brightens up Safari"

    May 29, 2011   |   By peripo

    Version: Glims 1.0b28

    Pros

Safari on it's own is a pretty view, with Glims you get icons that mean instant recognition with reading titles in bookmarks and the address bar

    Cons

none that I can think of

    Summary

To be honest, without reminding myself by reading the blurb again, I don't know exactly what Glims does other than bring colour to Safari, but I do know that the first thing I do after setting up a new Mac is add Glims, because Safari is my preferred browser and it's boring as all get out to look at without Glims and other addons.

"very neat; but some functionality to be enhanced"

    August 05, 2010   |   By QCCC

    Version: Glims 1.0b25

    Pros

change the cross sign of the tabs to the logo of the website; support Safari full screen

    Cons

In the optional search engines, there is no 'Google Scholar' listed, which is important for people in science.

    "Sweet addon"

    October 24, 2009   |   By philosopherdog

    Version: Glims 1.0b22

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Using it on Snow Leopard and Safari 4.03 and I find this addon extremely useful. Love the search suggestions. The default search suggestions in Safari are completely useless. Love all of the tab control stuff. The Full screen options (especially hiding the title bar) are brilliant and the ability to automatically open last tabs is sweet. Seems very stable on my setup. The one thing I'd like to see is in full screen view I love the ability to mouse over my dock. It would be nice to add that as a feature, or if someone can suggest a hack to do this I'd appreciate it. Good job.
