Publisher's Description
From Vitality ApS:
The problem with other ad-blockers for Safari is that they are implemented as awful hacks: as an InputManager and/or ApplicationEnhancer. This compromises the stability of Safari and very often create problems when Apple releases a new version of Safari. GlimmerBlocker is implemented as an http proxy, so the stability of Safari isn't compromised because it doesn't use any hacks. It is even compatible with all other browsers. You'll always be able to upgrade Safari without breaking GlimmerBlocker (or waiting for a new release); and you'll be able to upgrade GlimmerBlocker without upgrading Safari. This makes it much easier to use the beta versions of Safari and especially the nightly builds of WebKit. Because GlimmerBlocker doesn't hack Safari, there is a few things it isn't able to do: adding a block by right-clicking an image, stopping pop-unders, and filtering cookies from 3rd party sites. But you win a lot in stability, and GlimmerBlocker provides much easier methods for adding your own modifications to pages by adding css rules, pieces of Javascript or by transforming the html before Safari receives it. So I'll hope you're happy with the tradeoff. If you can program in Javascript you'll be able to add your own modification to pages. See the included filters for examples, e.g. adding a download link to YouTube.
What's new in this version: History tab, Keyword expansion in Safari, Better error page, Preview when editing rule and other improvements.

Summary
Certainly a lot better than my old pc runnin adware blocker, norton internet security, and firefox with addons all which were supposed to reduce this isse still let some pop ups through. This is one piece of software that will eliminate those unwanted pop-up annoyances for good!

"Installs easily, works as advertised"
Version: GlimmerBlocker 1.4.4
Pros
Several sites were hanging up and failing to load, due to animated ads. I installed GlimmerBlocker and the problem disappeared immediately. Plus other sites that were loading before are now free from aggravating ads.
Cons
So far, I have found no downside to this software.
Summary
Over time, I guess I became used to having increasingly obnoxious ads on websites of all kinds. But when Safari starting hanging up regularly on sites loaded with ads, I decided to look for a solution. A quick search led me to GlimmerBlocker, and short reviews of the software indicated that this might solve the problem.
I have a new iMac 27 Quad and I was hesitant to install anything that might hamper its performance or conflict with the with OS. But I took a shot with GlimmerBlocker and was extremely satisfied. I wish I had installed this weeks ago.
Installation was extremely fast and simple. The default setup seems to be solving all the safari download problems, so I have had no need to modify the settings.
I can now load websites, such as appleinsider, that would hang up 4 out of 5 times, with one or two items failing to load, usually "doubleclick.net" sites.
If you truly want to minimize all ad problems and unwanted traffic, then I can't say if this program is the ultimate answer. But if you want to eliminate the most annoying ads, and make safari work for you, give GlimmerBlocker a try. -
"I tried the others and no joy..."

what a feeling of relief when videos that I post which are copyright flagged-if they dont pull them-then they put a popup ad for Amazon on them; I feel that
For FREE;
I am providing high quality content for YT-TV stations have to pay to get programs, ya know
I am doing free publicy and promotion for the record company and group by making a video
all for art and personal satisfaction and no life
So how irksome to see ads pop up over my titles
and now NOT ONE of them pops up-in fact the ad flag and Amazon pull down menu is gone!!!
5 cheers for Glimmer! -
"This is my new ad blocker"
Version: GlimmerBlocker 1.4.2
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've used GlimmerBlocker off and on for a couple years, but was a loyal PithHelmet user, so I never switched until recently. GlimmerBlocker does not slow down Safari at all, which was the motivating factor in the switch. It hasn't caught as many ads as PH, but the offending ad sites can easily be added to GlimmerBlocker's black list. Adding sites is easy. -
"Works fine"
Version: GlimmerBlocker 1.4.1
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This product replaces my previous ad blocker and URL shortcut add-ons, SafariBlock and Sogudi. When Apple gave input managers the heave-ho, I had to find something else, and this was the only free option. So I tried it. It's perfect. It's easy to configure, and the ads it chooses to block seem to be reasonable. I still get ads, but the annoying or NSFW ones aren't there anymore. If that's not good enough, you can configure it to block more ads. I recommend trying it. -
"Way too problematic"
Version: GlimmerBlocker 1.3.3
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
After 2 months, I'm uninstalling GlimmerBlocker. It just causes too many problems, not only with Safari 3.2.1, but with other Internet apps as well. I have no time to list them all now, but I did want to add my low rating in order to warn others who would consider this app: It does effectively block ads in Safari, but the tradeoff is not worth that functionality. -
"Blocks Podcasts in iTunes"
Version: GlimmerBlocker 1.3.3
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I tried GlimmerBlocker today. It did fine blocking ads in Safari, but it also prevented me from downloading podcasts in iTunes. Ugh! There may be a way to change the settings so this does not happen, but it's hardly worth the time to troubleshoot the issue. If blocking podcasts is a default behavior, I can only wonder what other hidden impacts GB will have. PithHelmet may "hack" Safari, but it does not have unintended system-wide consequences. I'll just have to wait for it to be updated for Safari 4. -
"BEST AD BLOCKER ON OS X"
Version: GlimmerBlocker 1.3.1
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Absolutely the best ad-blocker I've used, and I've used them all! Adblock/PithHelmet are hacks into Safari, and potentially breaks with every Safari upgrade. I've tried using a stylesheet, those are ugly and annoying to update.
Then comes GlimmerBlocker, installed as a System Preference! The default subscriptions work beautifully, and you can make your own custom filters! The best part for me is that I've been able to produce my own filters, then host them on my webDAV server for others (friends/family) to subscribe to in their GlimmerBlocker!
This makes sharing filters easy as pie!!!! The author unfortunately is not currently taking donations, and the app is free! Very responsive, and has fixed every single issue I've had with it (compatibility issues with iSpQ and a few minor glitches); for my purposes, this app is now bug free! :) -
"Self-Configurable AdBlocking"
Version: GlimmerBlocker 1.2
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Great ability to self-configure for the reasonably technically competent. Turned Barefeats.com from animated GIF mess into a nice white and black website. Brilliant.
PS. I am also an ex-PithHelmeter (paid). Due to the constant issues of breaking (and current releases don't cover animated GIFs anyway), I gave up PithHelmet a while ago. I have a custom .hosts file but it's a pain to configure. Glimmer solves the configuration issues.
