Gladinet Cloud Desktop Starter Edition provides seamless desktop access to cloud storage from Amazon, and Google providers. It keeps your documents synchronized on multiple PCs and creates backups based on folder or file type selections. Access is provided from a local drive on your desktop which allows management of cloud files and folders from Windows Explorer. Backups may include dynamic data from applications like databases. Mirrored and snapshot backups are supported. Mirrored backups maintain the latest versions of files in the backup set while snapshot backups allow older versions of files to be restored.

"DOES NOT WORK"
Version: Gladinet Cloud Desktop Starter Edition 4.0.982
Free BUT ...
does not work...
It appears that the latest version 4.0.982 simply does not work with SkyDrive. Continuously unstable, it keeps on loading and loading but no documents appear... When the console is engaged, download speed is 0.
Despite numerous emails to Support (who take anything up to three days to answer), we have had no joy. Their final response was "looks like SkyDrive is unstable (i.e. not our fault) and we'll take a look at it". Weeks later, the problems continued. We uninstalled it and now use another programme which is far more consistent
"Ver 3 was a good deal - Ver 4 is absurdly expensive"
Version: Gladinet Cloud Desktop Starter Edition 4.0.935
Ver 3 Professional
Basic purpose: Allows you to easily access Amazon Cloud, Google Drive, Skydrive from windows file manager
The reason I bought it: Allows you to upload very large folders to Skydrive (beyond Microsoft's limits) by breaking the file up, this works great
Overally - Easy to mount new drive and change settings
sync function is not reliable
Very nice way to manage multiple cloud services.my comment about ver 4 price is a mistake
Allows you to get large files into cloud services by splitting files.
Updated on Aug 21, 2012
I confused their ver 4 for Teams which is the expensive subscription service with ver 4 Professional
sorry for the mistake
"Good for cloud storage access"
Version: Gladinet Cloud Desktop Starter Edition 4.0.904
You can access dropbox and more cloud services in a single windows client software.
Has some glitches yet. Need to pay later.
"Company has no interest in building customer base"
Version: Gladinet Cloud Desktop Starter Edition 4.0.881
Fairly intuitive design
Works with windows 7 64bit
able to connect to a variety of online storage accounts
Program is glitchy (V3):
had trouble syncing files with account so it continuously copied the same file thousands of times trying to correctly sync it.
Didn't self update the software to fix compatibility issues. had to reinstall software.
A lot of my complaints are for v3, the old version of this software, and many problems were fixed, but some of the major problems were promised and never delivered for v3. Instead the company rolled out v4 where you have to sign up for a yearly subscription. Gladinet was advertised as a cheaper solution than many of the other cloud storage services out at the time, and it was. But their new model isn't what i was expecting for this software. Will not be upgrading to v4 after my experience with the company.
"Limit to only 1GB of data"
Version: Gladinet Cloud Desktop Starter Edition 4.0.871
Good to have two cloud services using a single apps
Should be more open with the restrictions of the free version. Free version limts to 2 serviecs, and max of 1GB of data. Useless when most services are offering 5GB free now.
"Company direction is pathetic - "stay away!!""
Version: Gladinet Cloud Desktop Starter Edition 4.0.856
Consolidate all your cloud into one drive (with sub-folders)
Easy to provide file encryption and file compression
Works with windows 7 and XP
Good response to support calls
-Web folder /online folder never worked in version 3
-Customers with v3 needs to buy v4 (even thou there many bugs in v3)
-They keep removing features and product and not path for upgrade.
-Constant crash in v3
-No ability to remove file versions from sync, once its established in there interface you can never remove it.
-Writing many files (via ftp storage provider) to sub-folders will eventually hick-up and start writing the files root folder (never fixed).
-No clear focus from company on one single product (and each has huge problems)
-Every product they are offering now focuses (if it has any features at all) on monthly subscription model.
-Poor response to patching promised features and serious product defects.
-Once files are encrypted you "Must" use their client any decryption of files you stored via them.
-No linux version
I was patiently waiting on them to fix gladinet v3 so that it would be able to access cloud files (as was promised on their website/blurb), they kept promising it would come (in the next patch/hot fix or after they transitioned to new cloud servers)... and 6 months later when it did come it came as an upgrade (their so call v4) with a price tag and monthly fees and charge per what is stored in there cloud (v3 offered access to your computer files through there web interface, v4 is no longer designed that way).
I cannot recommend this company and "any" of their products, "stay away", company lacks clear focus as to whom their customers are or should be and when they do get a customer what they are looking for in a company (for me what I purchased should work and repeated promises should be kept).
"Does the job"
Version: Gladinet Cloud Desktop Starter Edition 4.0.848
Easy to install, set up. Drag and drop files into online folders works quickly.
Right-click in Windows to "Send to.." doesn't immediately work to Gladinet drive. You need to modify Windows "Send to" folder to add shortcuts to online folders. But once done, that works easily too.
"Pretty good free solution"
Version: Gladinet Cloud Desktop Starter Edition 4.0.839
Free. Allows Google Docs, Skydrive, etc. to be treated as a virtual desktop drive. Reasonably easy to install and set up. Drag and drop files to upload.
In Windows, "Send to" on the right-click menu will not send the file to the virtual Z: drive as it initially sets up. This is fixable but it takes extra effort and Gladinet provides no obvious directions.
I'm a regular user of Google Docs and Windows Skydrive for collaborative editing, file sharing, etc. The free version of Gladinet provides a convenient alternative to having to open a browser window to upload files to these or other cloud sites.
Installation is pretty straightforward, up to a point. The setup console asks for the URL location(s) of your personal Docs or other cloud storage folder. I initially set up both my Google Docs Windows Skydrive sites. Gladinet puts an icon in the Windows task bar which provides easy access to the Gladinet virtual drive (Z:) or to its management console. The virtual drive opens to a Windows Explorer window which displays all the folders in the online site(s). You can then drag and drop a file into any of the online folders exactly as you would on your desktop. Or alternately, open, move, delete, etc. files in the online folders.
Some reviewers here complain about limited file size and slow execution. I haven't tried moving any very big files or batches so it hasn't been a problem for me. And speed of uploading files via Comcast cable has been very fast.
The annoying (but solvable) problem I ran into was when I tried to use the "Send to" option when you right-click on a file in a folder on your computer. The Gladinet virtual drive Z: appears as one of the destination options. But -- at least with multiple online sites included in the Gladinet drive -- sending a file to Z: produces a confusing error message along the line that Z: is a virtual directory; please mount a virtual directory.
By searching the Web for "modifying send to" in Windows, I found directions that enabled me to solve the problem. Basically you must find the "Send to" folder under Windows Users/Apps; create a shortcut in the Gladinet Z: directory for whatever online folder(s) you would want to send files to; then drag the shortcut(s) into "Send to" menu folder. With that done, it then is easy to right-click on a file and send it to any online folder you want.
That's all I needed Gladinet to do. Having set it up now the way I wanted, I find the free app very useful. As other reviewers indicated, I have not found another app that does the same thing.
"Isn't a free solution"
Version: Gladinet Cloud Desktop Starter Edition 3.2.704
Good to learn how to use the cloud as storage
It isn't free. You will eventually have to pay almost $50 for it.
The starter edition becomes disabled and you can't access anything through the software unless you pay $50.
"Does what it have to do."
Version: Gladinet Cloud Desktop Starter Edition 3.2.644
The only software for this type of service.
Could have a sync option. Maybe an union with SyncBack.
