CNET Editors' review
The spell checker is one of the great software inventions, saving face (and other bits of anatomy) for countless writers. Conceived as part of another software milestone, the word processor, spelling, and grammar checkers are found anywhere people have access to keyboards and entry fields, but especially in e-mail clients, chat apps, and similar software. Ginger is a free spelling and grammar checker based on concepts like full-sentence context and text-to-pronunciation. This free Web-based tool can help writers improve their skills and produce clear, error-free text, but it's particularly effective for learning English as a second language and helping individuals with dyslexia and similar learning issues improve their writing and communication skills. Ginger is fully compatible with Microsoft Office tools such as Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint, as well as Firefox and other browsers.
Ginger installs locally on your PC, but it also uses Web-based tools, and it requires an active Internet connection to work. Setting up Ginger is easy. When it's running, Ginger places a small button bar centered at the top of the screen; clicking it opens an expanding spell checker panel, or you can press F2 to have Ginger check any open document. Ginger's interface is split horizontally between the text being checked and the same text with recommended changes (if any) highlighted; clicking Approve accepts the changes, or you can simply click away to close the window. The Settings menu accesses features such as our Personal Dictionary; we could also set Ginger as our default spell checker in Word and other apps and access a Web-based Help file, user community, and other resources.
Ginger is easy to configure and use, but first-time users may want to run the program's tutorials. Ginger is capable of creating lessons and quizzes based on your errors -- unlike other spell checkers, which are happy to let you go on making the same mistakes over and over again. Ginger also incorporates specific, unique technology designed to help people with dyslexia, including tools that focus on unusual and phonetic spelling. Ginger's personalized tutor feature analyzes repeated errors, including whole-context errors, and suggests corrections. A premium version is available.

Do not install this, it added so many others things that took me a while to get off. My home page is still a bit messed up and doesn't run properly. Thought it was going to be good because it had the editors choice review but it is a piece of crap. I still can't get the icon of my desktop because I have uninstalled this it is giving me an unauthorized error message when I try to delete the icon. Load of crap.

"Tedious installation; intrusive; not useful"
Version: Ginger 2.7.160
Pros
None that I could see
Cons
Tedious installation; intrusive; not useful
Summary
I was testing this out for someone on a forum I'm on who is just starting out with writing for the 'net and has trouble with grammar, spelling, etc. I found a lot of online spell checkers but they weren't enough; the reviews here looked promising.
This was another 2-step download, which in itself is a pain; add to that the stuff I had to turn off manually (TIP: DO A CUSTOM INSTALLATION or you will have unwanted toolbars and other nonsense to deal with later) *and* the Firefox add-on I found out I had to install too and this was not an easy process.
I didn't really need Ginger to work in its "contextual" mode; I use a text editor almost exclusively and when I do open a word processor it's Works' version, which Ginger isn't compatible with. All I wanted was something I could paste some text into that it would check - not just for spelling but also grammar, punctuation, etc., because I thought that was what the other person would be doing. I did manage to access the online version but all it did was open a tiny window that wasn't resizable, and when I pasted in the text it checked only spelling. There are plenty of other sites that will do that - without the hassle of installation. And it says right at the top of this page that this is a "Grammar and Spell Checker."
Thinking maybe it just had a steeper learning curve that I needed to get through, I was going to play around with it some more. But the next time I encountered it was when I was working with a spreadsheet; I hit F2 to change some data and instead got a popup box saying Ginger wasn't compatible. That wasn't the first time I'd seen that message - when I'd opened the Works word processor right after I'd installed Ginger just as a test to see if it would work there I got that message. But in the spreadsheet it wouldn't let me get out of it to make the change I wanted. That was enough for me; I've uninstalled it. And now I have to uninstall the Firefox add-on too. -

"piece of crap!"
Version: Ginger 2.7.160
Pros
None at all.
Cons
Didn't work, and it screwed with all of my internet options. I had to unnstall 3 different programs to get it off my computer. My home pages are still messed up. If you are going to install this garbage, read the contract, and make sure you don't let them install anything extra.
Summary
Still looking for a good grammar checker.

"It's effective software"
Version: Ginger 2.7.29
Pros

Cons
We had been using Google Chrome anyway as our browser
Summary
Our company, especially the staff, was thrilled to incorporate Ginger for Chrome as the default spell checker and grammar checker. Of late, we had been getting errors in our correspondence, both grammatical as well as wrong spellings, which could have reflected poorly on our company. We have found the Ginger software far exceeds other spellcheckers in the market in the wide range of services it provides. We had been using Google Chrome anyway as our browser, and finding Ginger software for Chrome was an added bonus, seamlessly incorporating the software on the Chrome web browser and using it without any trouble. Our staff has found that Ginger is quite easy to configure and use and most of them did so without any trouble. Ginger for Chrome also utilizes patented technology specifically made to help people with dyslexia, which is an excellent way to help people with learning disabilities. Thank you Ginger! "

Summary
"I am the production manager for a medical transcription company, with over 40 transcriptionists in my team. We are mostly handling big teaching hospitals in the United States, most of them with over 500 beds. We handle the bulk of their files, and getting the words spelled correctly with the proper use of grammar is paramount. We handle the bulk of their files, and getting the words spelled correctly with the proper use of grammar is paramount. As we use Google Chrome for most of the research done by the team online, we were introduced to the Ginger software exclusively for Google Chrome, and have installed this in all our computer units. It was found that this software is excellent for our team, and our accuracy rate has shot up to over 98.8% overall. This grammar and spell checker far exceeds the scope of other spellcheckers in the market, and I would fully recommend Ginger for Chrome to anyone who wishes to use an excellent product for work similar to ours."

"Works great!"
Version: Ginger 2.7.29
Pros
Ginger is a very helpful and useful grammar and spell checker. It saved me a lot of mistakes up until now. It is also user friendly.
Ginger works on my Twitter and Facebook accounts - a big advantage in my opinion, since my browser's spell checker doesn't correct most of my mistakes.
And don't forget- it's free!Cons
Should add a dictionary
Summary
Highly recommended for everyone who uses English

"Does the job!"
Version: Ginger 2.7.29
Pros
Using it for my essays in college. Previously I used the Word spell checker which was terrible in the sense that it wasn't able to catch errors like "My friend and I meat today" (as meat is a valid word) or "see you on September". Ginger filters all of that and is very "quiet" and comfortable to work with. Friends are also using it and happy with it. The correction suggestions very much reflect what I was trying to say.
Cons
Might add a "learn more" to explain the errors
Summary
Really solves the problem - Don't know how foreign students survive without such a tool : )
