  • "Jockeying for your musical attention"
  • Version reviewed: GOM Media Player 2.1.3.3413

As various media players jockey for position to become your default setting for music and video streams, GOM Media Player's support for a wide range of file formats has helped it stand out as a firm favorite.

Supported formats include DAT, MPEG, DivX, XviD, WMV, ASF, AVI, and MOV, as are common codecs like FLV1, AC3, OGG, MP4, and H263. A pop-out playlist can save and organize your various media files, though the limited sort modes--two--hardly makes it a champ.

More impressive are the customizable settings on the control panel. Here you can adjust a video's image brightness, hue, and saturation. There's no preview window, and changes occur as the video runs, so unless you care for a rousing session of trial and error, be sure to tweak the settings after clicking "play." There's also a built-in screen-capture feature that includes zooming and panning, customizable themes, hot keys, and a host of preset and adjustable audio controls.

GOM is weakest when you're looking for help documentation and trying to tweak Save settings, but overall it's a very strong player worth at least a supporting role in your video-watching habits, if not the lead.

    "Unbelievable piece of software!!"

by Dano on April 28, 2007

Pros: I never seen a program do this much for FREE. Plays ANY music/video file you can find. Even plays DVD/DIVX as well (with the proper codecs) download is all I can say. It actually blows away any media player on the market. You can even adjust brightness and contrast or even color levels. This program has everything you can possibly imagine.

Cons: You should pay to keep this software alive!!

Pros: so much better than VLC...has more options for you...looks great...takes less memory; upon trying this out, i remove VLC: 31.63 mb out the door compared to 19.12 mb for Gom...and it's FREE!

"A BIG WOW for this player."

by Ishigamma on June 19, 2007

Pros: First and foremost, I like the ability of the software to capture the screen. You can choose between BMP or JPEG format. Capture quality is good. It can play and supports the most video file including DVDs! It has a clean and well-organized interface, thus making this player a user-friendly. I can say that this a good DVD player compared to some priced software. This is freeware and I highly recommend this to download and install. It subtitle feature has many sub-feature...you can figure it out to the most font-type available.

Cons: Although I did not see a help file for this app, Its tab in EACH palletes has suggestion and recommendation on how this tab works.

    "Better than VLC? Yeah."

by SceptreX on June 16, 2007

Pros: -I like movies, and this program plays them with aplomb. It looks fairly nice and clean, doesn't use up too much processor space when playing movies (I got about a third of my junky computer on the video, which is great for movie playback, and it should be lower for most users).

-It supports most if not all) of the files types I will ever need, and without downloading a single codec. A few minutes in with this baby and VLC was off my computer in and instant.

-It's only about 4 megs of a download, which is a little smaller than VLC's 8 mb or any music/media players that go well into the 30's. The only one I'd say is a rival to this program is Winamp, which can play movies, have the whole media player thing all at 6 mb.

Cons: -There are so many all-in-one video players out there right now, and none of them really do a better job. I'm going for this one because it's smaller and has a nice long list of files I KNOW I will use...but will I?

-It's only real use is movies, because it has no organization method for music files.

-The "play .avi files even if not finished" thing, while awesome and spectacular in concept, did not work for any of the files I attempted with the program. A three-quarters-downloaded movie would just stop within the first second and refuse to budge.

-There are a FEW skins, and none of them are worth downloading (all a bunch of iTunes or WMP copycats), so what you see in the screenshot is what you get for the most part.
