"Changes, for the Better or the Worse?"

I took a loop from GIMP 2.6 to GIMP 2.8, and my initial reactions were negative. For example, converting files to JPG, PNG, or any other non- xcf file was changed. In 2.6, it was practical since you could use the Save feature too, while in 2.8 you must choose a seperate option which is export.

On trying to run the help system for Gimp 2.8, I received the enlightening message that I've committed an unsupported function call. I wasted hours to realize that the only help installer available is for version 2.6, not 2.8.; this help system is incompatible with 2.8. A compressed help file for 2.8 turned out to be perfectly suitable for Unix programmers, not for users like myself. And not a word about this trap on the web site. True, the program is free; I suppose that means that one must despair of one's hopes for basic information. Who knows what else awaits me if I dare use the program.

This program is great for people who want to do advanced work with graphics and not pay an arm and a leg for it. The controls are not very complicated if you know what they are. One would think operating a forklift to be difficult if they didn't know how to drive one. It has many aspects that are comparable to Photoshop, and can edit Photoshop documents.
Cons
Being a free program means that people have to use it to find the bugs. That's a con with almost all open-source software, but it is worth it. I have no qualms otherwise. If you are used to using open-source software and doing bug reports then this will not be a problem for you. Um...it doesn't make me coffee?
Summary
This program is great for designers on a budget, people that do recreational photo editing, web designers, designing graphics for print, and anything else you can think of. Easy controls, two different window modes, the ability to edit a TON of files, and many options. It is hard to go wrong using this program.

The toolbox for the carpenter does not make him a skilful carpenter but it is a condition for his work and his skills, the same goes for a photographer, Gimp or alternative professional editing program is a condition for his work, but you yourself must be skilful to do skilful editing. Gimp gives you just the tools.

I think that I should mention that in this new version of Gimp 2.8 you have the option to open Gimp in a single window mode, that is if you dislike opening Gimp in a three windows mode, you can now change this by choosing the single mode instead!
It has total flexibility.
The programs total flexibility is one reason why it is so great.
People who says that Gimp is complicated or that the GUI is bad etc. do not actually know what they are talking about.
Gimp is a very simple program to edit professional work with. If you find it complicated, it is not because the program is complicated but because the task you are going to do is complicated.
That Gimp opens in three windows might be a good or might be a bad thing, but I find this debate about this as a extremely minor issue.
I think that Gimp is a gift from heaven as you get this great program for nothing.
I also think that it is great that it is open source. No nagging about upgrading. You can install in how many computers you like. No one cares! That is worth a lot! You do not either need to buy a new computer to use it, the old one will do!

"Not user-friendly enough"

Summary
After using Photoshop for a while, I tried this in lieu of buying the full Photoshop program. Maybe I didn't give it a fair shot, but I want a program that is simple to use but also has easy-to-use effects and features, and Gimp wasn't it. This is 2012 and if you want to compete, then you'd better have one-click everything. Gimp tried my patience.
