CNET Editors' review
The volunteer developers of The GIMP have been working hard to develop a polished, user-friendly, and freely distributed image editor. Although the separated palette windows may disturb those users who are used to more traditional layouts, your comfort level should grow exponentially as you discover how pain-free the program is.
One of the most powerful general-purpose image editors around, the upgrades make the GNU Image Manipulation Program eminently comparable to Photoshop. Older features include channels, layers and masks, filters and effects, tabbed palettes, editable text tools, perspective clone, improved printing, and color operations such as levels. New improvements include GEGL integration for 32-bit color support, dynamic brushes, and more options for the free select tool. It even has regex-based pattern matching for power users.
The application provides professional tools that can stand against the big boys without the hefty price tag. Even the installation process has gotten simpler, with no need to download and install the GTX Runtime Environment separately. Extremely powerful and easy to work with, GIMP is ideal for both amateur and pro photographers, Web designers, or anyone who wants to create and edit professional-quality digital images on a budget.

"Crashes every time I try to launch it."
Version: GIMP 2.6.6
Pros
If it would actually work, I might list some.
Cons
Crashes and almost freezes my Mac.
Summary
I'm fairly new to Mac, and this is the first program I've tried that wouldn't even run, let alone nearly crash my computer. It would be nice to find a program like this without spending tons of cash for PhotoShop. Unfortunately for me, this it totally useless. I guess I'll have to stick with iPhoto for now. I'll be removing this as soon as I'm done here. I haven't even had any iPhone apps that are this bad!

"Works well, but the user interface is difficult."
Version: GIMP 2.6.6
Pros
It does all it needs to do for users such as I. It's quick, fast, and effective. It has a number pre-sets that enable the user to manipulate images without a lot of work.
Cons
The user interface is not intuitive and not easy to decipher. Adding text to an image seems to be unnecessarily difficult.

"Strong set of tools, tricky user interface."
Version: GIMP 2.6.6
Pros
-Lots of tools
-Customizable
-Support Community
-Tons of options (export formats etc.)
-FREECons
-Key based shortcuts don't work on my mac in X11 (maybe it's just me)
-Interface has a steep learning curve
-Occasional crashes/freezesSummary
If you can spend an hour or two learning the basics of the user interface, this product is a good substitute for the pricier alternatives, at least for a casual user such as myself (school projects, etc.)

"Wonderfully free!"
Version: GIMP 2.6.6
Pros
Free! It works well on mac or windows
Cons
I wish it didn't need x11
Summary
I purchased Photoshop recently for pretty cheap but I'm feeling buyer's remorse especially considering that aside from the 3-d editing and the automate features I can do pretty much all I want to do using Gimp and a few other free programs. I really like Gimp. and have used various incarnations over the last two years.
