The volunteer developers of The GIMP have been working hard to develop a polished, user-friendly, and freely distributed image editor. Although the separated palette windows may disturb those users who are used to more traditional layouts, your comfort level should grow exponentially as you discover how pain-free the program is. The latest update is robust enough to have earned a full-point upgrade, although it's merely a jump from 2.2 to 2.4.
One of the most powerful general-purpose image editors around, the upgrades make the GNU Image Manipulation Program eminently comparable to Photoshop. Older features include channels, layers and masks, filters and effects, tabbed palettes, editable text tools, and color operations such as levels. New improvements include scalable brushes, revised selection tools, a new color menu, full-screen editing, a new crop tool, improved printing, red eye removal, perspective clone, lens distortion, and more. It even has regex-based pattern matching for power users.
The application provides professional tools that can stand against the big boys without the hefty price tag. Even the installation process has gotten simpler, with no need to download and install the GTX Runtime Environment separately. Extremely powerful and easy to work with, GIMP is ideal for both amateur and pro photographers, Web designers, or anyone who wants to create and edit professional-quality digital images on a budget.

Version: GIMP 2.4.7
Pros: You can do just about everything that the expensive products can do with Gimp. Hurray for open source software.
Cons: Learning curve a little steep and some processes are not intuitive.
Summary: Absolutely great for those needing professional software but can't afford the price.

Version: GIMP 2.4.7
"Good Free Photoshop Replacement"
Pros: Powerful, it can do "almost" everything you can do with Photoshop
Cons: Awkward interface, it could be nicer.
Not a lot of literature out there (you'll have to find scattered articles over the Internet)Summary: A must have if you can't afford Photoshop

Version: GIMP 2.4.7
Pros: it is easy to get to know how to use the software and the frequent updates keeps it current
Cons: The number of different boxes that can be opened although as you get used to it it becomes second nature to close the ones no longer in use.
Summary: Once the tools have been learnt it is easy to use and the updates do not seem to change the easy of use or drastically alter the layout and location of the various tools

"Impressive, solid, and free."
Pros: In no time, I was giddy with the fact that I had done some great photo editing for free. The revelation is to stop thinking of Gimp as a PS clone. This is a solid program that stands tall on its own.
Cons: It doesn't have certain advanced color standards for the print industry which doesn't effect me or 90% of the people who spent $700 on Photoshop.
Summary: It's a FREE program that would probably sell for well over $200 if it were a retail product. The tools, functions and intuitive design make this one of the best open source products available.
