From BoxTop Software :GIF Prep is a simple, easy, drag-and-drop utility that will strip the resource forks from GIF and JPEG files. It is usually difficult to find out how big these files really are because of the resource fork that is automatically added by Photoshop. Photoshop puts information in the image resource fork for previews, custom icons, printer settings, and more. GIF Prep will ensure that the file size you see in the Finder's Get Info dialog is accurate by discarding the image resource fork.
