"Highly recommended"
Version: Funk & Wagnalls New Encyclopedia
Summary
I highly recommend Funk and Wagnalls Encyclopedia 2004. It has enhanced my iPaq 4350 significantly, and has proven to be indispensible. Just yesterday I was reading about the Civil War with it, in a supermarket while my wife was putting things in the shopping trolley! The encyclopedia has a wide range of topics, e.g. McGill University (my alma mater), Bobby Orr (my favorite hockey player), and Donald Rumsfeld, all written in a clear and readable style. The encyclopedia has depth. I randomly selected the following eight articles, and counted the number of scroll pages: China (350 scroll pages), Chinese literature (55 scroll pages), USA (650), American Civil War (90), Beethoven (25), Julius Caesar (28), Dick Cheney (8), Bill Gates (6). Each article has numerous cross references for further information. I randomly selected two topics to see how complete and up to date they are: The article on Osama bin Laden talks about his childhood in Saudi Arabia, his inheritance, the Afghan resistance to USSR, his Mujahedin role, al-Qaeda, the attacks on the USA, 9-11, the $25 million reward for him. The article on George W. Bush talks about his studies, his early business and political activities, the 2000 elections, the $1.35 trillion tax cut, the stem cell debate, his advisors (Cheney, Powell, Rice, Rumsfeld are mentioned), 9-11, the war against terror, the SPEC summit, Homeland Security, Enron and Worldcom, WMD, the war in Iraq (but no mention of Saddam?s capture).
