Freemake Video Converter is an application mainly for converting video files to other formats, but offers other converting and downloading features as well.

This application is a worthwhile download. The layout is very simple, making it easy to understand how to use it. Freemake offers a row of media buttons at the top and bottom of the window, which are labeled clearly and are simple to use. It is very easy to navigate the various steps required to convert videos and audio as well as download videos and audio from the Internet. The waiting time varies from one conversion job to the next, depending on the size and type. Converting a t3-minute audio file to MP3 can be done in less than a minute, while converting a 15-minute video to WMV can take over an hour and a half.

The program's Help pages are very good. The tutorials come with a short video as well as images which are very easy to understand. There seem to be a lot of hidden gems in this converter as well, such as a few editing features for videos and the ability to add subtitles to your videos when you rip them from your DVDs. You can also convert photos and have plenty of conversion options.

"unusually easy download/install & well-designed product"

July 01, 2013  |  By dofaust

 |  Version: Freemake Video Converter 4.0.1.2

Pros

Obviously designed and programmed by pros and not grad students.
One of the best most intuitive UIs I have ever seen. 180 degrees
from almost all "open source", Adobe, or Microsoft look, feel, and behavior. Bravo.

Cons

Actually can't think of any. Although I do think they tried to get adware and a junky search machine installed, a common mistake.

Summary

One of the very best open source pieces of software. The users will soon start paying of their own accord, simply because the product works so well.

"NOT a conware, but boils processor"

July 01, 2013  |  By jeff_zzz

 |  Version: Freemake Video Converter 4.0.1.2

Pros

DOES what it says it does
NOT a conware: a software offering free ride and once you instal it does next to nothing and asks to buy

Cons

I have 2.4GHz x 4 with 8 GB RAM and 1GB Nvidia and it still managed to run all cores at 99% each.
Not very well coded software.

Summary

NOT a conware, but boils processor

"It installs hell of add-ons"

June 29, 2013

 |  Version: Freemake Video Converter 4.0.1.2

Pros

Software rotation, perfect

Cons

Lots of undesired software gets installed. Even though you unclick all add-ons, it still installs them.

Summary

Could be better w/o the undesired add-ons

"Works as advertized"

June 29, 2013  |  By mustangracing

 |  Version: Freemake Video Converter 4.0.1.2

Pros

First, I didn't find any extras that I could not opt out of. But like much software, the installer is set up to have the boxes checked to allow ads and toolbars. Just uncheck them and all is fine. Starts quick, runs well. Opens and allows editing as described here.

Cons

There is an issue where I can not select a part toward the end of a video and delete it to the very end. I had to leave a part of a second at the end for it to work. Minor for free ware, and I have contacted the programmers about thee issue to find a resolution. Final writing of the saved file does take a while.

Summary

It works, no spyware that I could find. For free, its the champ.

"Not sure what the others are saying about virus"

June 29, 2013  |  By kategilmour

 |  Version: Freemake Video Converter 4.0.1.2

Pros

Works perfect every time

Cons

Slightly slower than the converters I have paid for

Summary

Although it is a bit slower than the ones I have paid for, it works better the first time and without glitches in my HD videos. And when you only convert a video one time, that makes it faster (especially since a 6 or 7 gig HD video can take up to 7 hours).

When I downloaded the software there were no viruses or any malware or spyware or anything. As for a matter of fact, I downloaded all of Freemake products and use them all daily.

"Do not listen to some of these reviewers."

June 26, 2013  |  By guitarisrockin

 |  Version: Freemake Video Converter 4.0.1.2

Pros

Clean interface and easy to use. Perfect for converting a video to many different kinds of formats. I consider it outstanding based on the fact that it is free, and that it offers the user so much.

Cons

Nothing that I can think of.

Summary

First off, I would like to point out that there is no spyware or adware included in this software. I am truly amazed at the ignorance of many of these reviewers. Like many free software packages, they have a couple different screens during the installation where they try to get you to change your default browser to Internet Explorer or install toolbars. Everything that they ask for you to install can easily be avoided by just clicking no or do no accept. To avoid the toolbars you need to do custom installation and uncheck the toolbar installation option. As long as you pay attention to what you are doing in the installation you will not uninstall any unwanted software. Many users did not give this a good review simply because they were not cognizant of various screens during the install, and blindly clicked on things. People like this should not be allowed to review a piece of software since they didn't actually use the software, and were too ignorant to even pay attention to what they were doing during the installation.

"No Longer Good"

June 22, 2013  |  By JRM4

 |  Version: Freemake Video Converter 4.0.1.2

Pros

1. Older versions were very good, but not the newest one.

Cons

1. Installs adware/malware on your computer during installation. To be precise, sweetdreams - which requires hours to uninstall.
2. Program will not boot after removing the adware/malware from your computer.
3. Even with the adware/malware installed, the program will only boot 50% of the time.

Summary

This was an excellent program at one time; the best I had used. But since they have started packaging it with adware/malware, it has stopped being a beneficial program. Do not waste your time with it. I have uninstalled it and am looking for something new.

"So Pleased"

June 17, 2013  |  By massachusetts123

 |  Version: Freemake Video Converter 4.0.1.2

Pros

I only needed to convert a 2minute video from my camera that was so large in size. Needed to convert one format to another and to reduce size of the video so I can send through emails. I'm not familiar with this but it seemed easy to find online. But I tried a few other softwares recommended around the internet. So complex and not working. Then I thought, CNet! and saw Freemake. So easy to utilize. Others were confusing and couldn't do what I needed. Thank you!

Cons

Can't think of any.

"I am impressed and so is my sister!"

June 13, 2013  |  By Coilaman

 |  Version: Freemake Video Converter 4.0.1.2

Pros

This is a tremendous piece of software and it's free. You can use it to convert any video format into any other video format, but you can also use it to burn a DVD directly from your files, along with a menu and chapters without any file conversions at all.

This is a really reliable and a user friendly software that does not need you to be a computer geek in order to get your stuff done. Highly recommended. Just be careful when installing this software and decline on any prompts that ask you to install any tool bars and other frills that you really don't need.

Cons

It really should cost us something. How do these people survive? Oh, I know. There is a button called 'DONATE' on their site and I donated $5. You can do that too.

Summary

Please DO NOT listen to spammers saying that this is not freeware any more or that this software contains malware. This software is completely honest, clean, malware free and free of charge and that's why they call it 'Freemake'. Enjoy!

August 2014 UPDATE

I still keep using this great program and it still works the way it always used to work. My sister uses it on her old Pentium 4 with no issues at all. All my friends are now using it as well. That says enough about the quality of this software.
