Freemake Video Converter is an application mainly for converting video files to other formats, but offers other converting and downloading features as well.

This application is a worthwhile download. The layout is very simple, making it easy to understand how to use it. Freemake offers a row of media buttons at the top and bottom of the window, which are labeled clearly and are simple to use. It is very easy to navigate the various steps required to convert videos and audio as well as download videos and audio from the Internet. The waiting time varies from one conversion job to the next, depending on the size and type. Converting a t3-minute audio file to MP3 can be done in less than a minute, while converting a 15-minute video to WMV can take over an hour and a half.

The program's Help pages are very good. The tutorials come with a short video as well as images which are very easy to understand. There seem to be a lot of hidden gems in this converter as well, such as a few editing features for videos and the ability to add subtitles to your videos when you rip them from your DVDs. You can also convert photos and have plenty of conversion options.

"Beware of Malware... limited results"

December 27, 2012  |  By davidallenxyz

 |  Version: Freemake Video Converter 3.1.2

Pros

- Free
- Offers basic editing and conversion options
- Simple interface

Cons

- Tries to trick you into downloading a MALWARE toolbar (check the installation screens VERY carefully)
- Many of the conversions do not seem to work for me (mainly trying to edit/convert Panasonic/Samsung .MOVs to be playable on Windows). I've tried tweaking the default settings with little success, basically all I can do is save as a .WMV.
- Various other anomalies with file naming etc.
- Engine seems to be borrowed (stolen?) from Any Video Converter which has similar functionality issues.
- Did I mention the MALWARE?

Summary

You have to be suspicious of any "free" software that will use Malware as a way of generating revenue. For that reason I would not recommend it. The software itself is simple to use but much of the promised functionality is lacking. It's frustrating that the .MOV file format is so common in video devices yet Microsoft refuse to recognise it for licensing reasons - if they did, we wouldn't have to mess around with dodgy "free" software like this.

"Worthless."

December 09, 2012  |  By ncdave4life

 |  Version: Freemake Video Converter 3.1.2

Pros

Well, it was free, except for the cost of the blank DVD that I wasted.

Cons

I used it to burn a DVD movie from a 5-minute HD .mp4 file. The resulting DVD has a grainy, postage-stamp-sized, miniature video window on a big "wood-grained" background, with the video title and a FreeMake logo, and it shows just the first 14 seconds of the video over and over, with no sound.

Summary

Don't waste your time with FreeMake Video Converter version 3.1.2.0, at least not for burning DVD movies from .mp4 files. The program supports many other operations, so it is possible that some of them work, but not the one I tried.

"Doesn't work"

November 16, 2012  |  By arctos0384

 |  Version: Freemake Video Converter 3.1.2

Pros

Clean and easy interface with straightforward options

Cons

Video gets looped during conversion (it just keeps repeating the first 5 secs of video for the entire clip). Doesn't seem to work for Windows 7 x64.

"Crystally clean and useful"

November 16, 2012  |  By tristan002

 |  Version: Freemake Video Converter 3.1.2

Pros

This is the first software I decided to write a review about. Freemake is beyond one's expectations #1 video converter. I might have paid $100 for it, but it's free!

It helped me a lot with daily video conversion and download routine. What nice DVDs it makes! To say nothing of YouTube to MP3 download - fast and easy.

Cons

Watch out during the installation, it suggests to install another software, but I'm sure this is just to get a small money for developing such a great product.

Summary

I donated Freemake $100 and hope this will cover a bit software development expenses. It's really great to use such a nicely done product!

"Top notch software"

November 15, 2012  |  By lanquihue

 |  Version: Freemake Video Converter 3.1.2

Pros

Newbie or seasoned, Freemake is easy and does exactly what it says it'll do.

Cons

none that I have encountered.

Summary

I've read a few of the negative reviews, and I have these suspicions:

- For those complaining that Freemake installed toolbars or other stuff they didn't want, you guys weren't paying attention during install. Yes, Freemake pokes me to install three or four disc utils or tool bars or other stuff, RealPlayer, etc, every time I upgrade versions, but I pay attention, and therefore don't have those problems.

- Some have complained about bad video or bad audio with video after conversions. Another problem that I've not had with either of my computers, nor the guys in my office who've used this program at my recommendation. I suspect hardware problems with you guys.

I have used Freemake for many different reasons, it easily converts between formats, downloads video from web and save in any format including simply mp3, rip or burn DVD's. It does Blue Ray I guess, but I don't have one on either computer.

I have stacks of DVD's burned from downloaded videos, and I just simply have never had a problem with them. Also, unlike some other free DVD burning software, you can compress and burn up to twenty hours of video to a single DVD, if quality is not that big a deal. (Freemake will tell you what the quality will be, depending on how much stuff you're burning)

Bottom line, this software is called "converter", and if you want to do a bunch of high end editing, maybe you should go to Best Buy and find something else, but for simply converting, ripping & burning DVD's, or copying snippets of video or DVD to put on hand held devices or just to have, nothing beats this little gem. I am obviously a fan and have been for a long time. I will also give a shout out to Freemake Audio Converter.
