Freemake Video Converter is an application mainly for converting video files to other formats, but offers other converting and downloading features as well.

This application is a worthwhile download. The layout is very simple, making it easy to understand how to use it. Freemake offers a row of media buttons at the top and bottom of the window, which are labeled clearly and are simple to use. It is very easy to navigate the various steps required to convert videos and audio as well as download videos and audio from the Internet. The waiting time varies from one conversion job to the next, depending on the size and type. Converting a t3-minute audio file to MP3 can be done in less than a minute, while converting a 15-minute video to WMV can take over an hour and a half.

The program's Help pages are very good. The tutorials come with a short video as well as images which are very easy to understand. There seem to be a lot of hidden gems in this converter as well, such as a few editing features for videos and the ability to add subtitles to your videos when you rip them from your DVDs. You can also convert photos and have plenty of conversion options.

"Used to be great - but DO NOT install this."

August 23, 2014  |  By stuyd11

 |  Version: Freemake Video Converter 2.0.0.1

Pros

Great functionality - but now nullified by malware.

Cons

As many others have pointed out, this has now become a malware-fest. Unfortunately I did not know this when I upgraded it. Even if you uncheck all the options to install crapware, it silently installs software that hijacks all your browsers and adds various services. It even managed to unpin Chrome from my taskbar. Fortunately I run Scotty WinPatrol but even this did not manage to stop everything. I've never seen it so busy.

Summary

After having been happy with this for a number of years, its now time to avoid!

"buggy bloatware"

January 16, 2011  |  By jeannotvh

 |  Version: Freemake Video Converter 2.0.0.1

Pros

Free and pretty

Cons

This took about 20 minutes to install (3 GHz quad core), UI is horrible. Designed by teenagers for teenagers. You click on what appears to me a File menu, nothing happens. I had to reboot before menus started working.

Summary

If you have plenty of time on your hands, go ahead: Spend 30 minutes installing it, then 30 minutes uninstalling it.

"Nice Application"

January 13, 2011  |  By MikeySample

 |  Version: Freemake Video Converter 2.0.0.1

Pros

Clean simple interface.

Cons

I found the DVD burn process very slow. The avalable formats for conversion included most popular formats, but excluded M2TS which I wanted.

Summary

Nice package for most applications.

"Works perfectly"

January 13, 2011  |  By dukeychase

 |  Version: Freemake Video Converter 2.0.0.1

Pros

Easy to use, mark portions of videos like a song in a video to convert to MP3.

Cons

Apparently cannot convert from Blu-ray to anything.

Summary

For free software this is pretty great. But I was looking for something that can convert *FROM* blu-ray to anything else.

"Best free video converter with multi-format support"

January 13, 2011  |  By m_krsmanovic

 |  Version: Freemake Video Converter 2.0.0.1

Pros

Ease of use, clean interface, good compression when converting from DVD or Blu-Ray format to mkv.

Cons

Does not support subtitles, but their support informed me it's in planning. Performance and CPU usage (especially the multi-core ones) could be better.

Summary

Tested it on DVD to mkv and m2ts (Blu-ray native file format) to mkv conversions and was really impressed by how much space it could save. At the same time it will allow you to just get the movie stream from the DVD without any extra junk usually bundled in. Then you can simply double-click on the mkv file and start your movie instead of waiting for DVD menu to appear. m2ts to mkv conversion appears to be "too good to be true" since I was able to convert a full HD film to full HD mkv file at just over 4 GB which is great and with no apparent loss of quality. Different audio streams can be also be selected, but subtitles cannot be selected in this version yet. If the DVD has different video streams like for example an interesting documentary, this can be easily converted into a single mkv file or any other format of your choice. I was also successfull in converting full length films into iPod format for my son's iPod nano. Great piece of software I would to recommend to anyone dealing with different video formats.

"Awesome Video Converter"

January 12, 2011  |  By bobbyb007

 |  Version: Freemake Video Converter 2.0.0.1

Pros

This product has it all for a simplified, easy to use, does everything video converter tool.

Cons

I have no bad words for this product. I'm not a hollywood film maker or a professional videographer but for my needs as a casual video novice who just wants to to convert various video types for use on multiple platforms this is it.

Summary

I love that you can install this tool and in a matter of seconds without having to read any user guides or tutorials you can point it at any video with one of many format types and easily convert it for use on your PC, publish videos to DVD or format them for view on my Droid 2 phone; with this product I'm good to go.

Attractive interface and easy to follow. Produces excellent .avi files.

No faster than similar apps in Windows and Linux.

I like this app because it's the first of this kind that can be followed easily by non-geek types and so it is simple to teach.
