A good ripper makes all the difference when transferring your CD tracks to MP3s. FreeRIP not only extracts and converts your audio tracks but also finds and downloads CD and track information and presents it in editable form right on the interface. It's easy to start right up with FreeRIP, but it includes a multi-language manual as well as tutorials and FAQs, if you should need them. FreeRIP supports the most common audio formats, not only MP3 but also FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, WMA, and WAV. It can also convert files between any two supported formats. Of course, FreeRIP can also play your files.

FreeRIP's nice-looking interface includes three tools: the Ripper, Converter, and Tagger. We loaded an audio CD in our burner's tray. FreeRIP scanned and displayed the contents, automatically retrieving the CD's meta tags and displaying them in the right-hand sidebar. The program's colorful toolbar accesses all necessary functions, including an Options Window, which is a compact pop-up for setting program preferences. FreeRIP offers many more data fields for both tracks and albums than most users will need, but those who do will appreciate not only the detailed tags but also how easy it is to enter and edit data. FreeRIP can rip your CD tracks and save them in the low-loss FLAC format, which preserves more of the original quality. You can play them on your PC in the high-quality format, and then convert them into MP3s for your portable player later on.

We pressed the Rip CD button when we were ready, and FreeRIP processed our CD quickly, ripping and converting the batch of tracks one by one, and tracking the progress of each in a pop-up. If you have lots of CDs to rip and little time to do it, there's a paid upgrade, FreeRIP Pro, optimized for multicore CPUs. It offers faster ripping and other options, such as prioritization. But we had no problem with waiting a little longer, and the quality is the same, so we were perfectly happy with the freeware version of FreeRIP and the files it creates.

"Works Well for what it is."

July 01, 2010  |  By Guthries Girl

 |  Version: FreeRip MP3 3.4

Pros

It does what it says it does. I like that you can set ID tags etc. It converts from and to a number of formats, which is what I was looking for it to do.

Cons

It's slow for starters when converting files. It also will only convert 5 files at a times.

Summary

I'll keep it for now, at least until I can find something I like better that will batch convert, rather than being so limited as to 5 files at a time.

"Crashed Window 7, DVD ROM won't read anything at all."

June 28, 2010  |  By JSaloisSr

 |  Version: FreeRip MP3 3.4

Pros

Absolutely none.

Cons

I just finished burning 5 cd's before installing this program yesterday morning. I am still trying to get the drive to see a cd. Super AntiSpyware found 4 trojans. Stay away from this mess.

Summary

Install ANYTHING but this junk.

"not for Windows 7"

June 21, 2010  |  By juniper47

 |  Version: FreeRip MP3 3.4

Pros

Seemed to install but crashed in Windows 7. Closed all other programs to install. (!) I have no problems installing other programs. This one will not run. The GUI looks okay, tho.

Cons

doesn't work

"simple. fast. efficient."

June 19, 2010  |  By mong00se2020

 |  Version: FreeRip MP3 3.4

Pros

It's lightweight and easy to use, but has all the features I've needed (besides the obvious, it also was able to rip all tracks from a CD to a single mp3 file).

Cons

I've had nothing to complain of.

Summary

If you need to rip .cda files to your computer, then this little program is just what you want! Liberate yourselves from the age of hard-copies!! Enter the matrix now! On with the cloud!!! ...but, srsly, it's a really nice little program that I has served me well.

"Functional, easy to use, free ripper"

June 16, 2010

 |  Version: FreeRip MP3 3.4

Pros

Very good quality overall, clean rips and no tech issues with the program or the output, nice GUI, easy on the system, free of spyware/scumware/adware of any kind (that's a big one with me) and, of course, free to use.

Cons

Some CDs do not seem to rip with tags, just generic "track 01, track02", etc. Not a huge deal for me as I can manually rename them later. Also some CDs just rip the tracks without creating the (album title) folder for them; also not a big deal.

Summary

Upon opening of the program I get this interesting error message "this system is not configued to allow normal users (as you are) to low level access to CD devices. Without authorization FreeRIP is not able to access CD devices. Please ask your network administrator to grant you such authorization."
Seems a bit of a spoof as I'm still able to fully utilize the program without any further errors. I'm running Win7, UAC disabled, and am an admin; also run the program in admin mode. My home network comprises of 7 machines running various Win: xp, vista, and 7 home and ultimate. Perhaps the program sees other CD/DVD drives across my network, not sure. All I care is that FreeRIP works and I get the rips done with no issues, rips are trouble-free, and the program is free. Can't beat that. Thank You to the developers!

Forgot to mention: I see some reviewers had issues with the toolabr; I just unchecked the toobar option(s) during the install and had absolutely NO issues with hijacking of the browser, and the program runs fine. Yes, there is a nag screen upon program opening, giving user the choice to purchase the pro version but it does NOT impede the functionality of the free version at all, no limited number or size of tracks that I found. No idea why the heavy complaining from some of the reviewers - it's a free version, of course the developers will see if you want to buy the paid one! After all, they need to make a living, too, don't you think? (no, I am not at all affiliated or related tto them; just honest about the program).

"Never worked!"

 |  Version: FreeRip MP3 3.4

Pros

Absolutely none!

Cons

Not only did this product not run, it somehow changed the home page on both of my browsers. I was running XP at the time if that makes any difference.

Summary

I don't know if it was because I was using XP, but this product didn't ever run and wouldn't even install.
