"Great Editor! Recorder needs work though!"
Version: Free Sound Recorder 7.8.5
Pros
Editor is simple to learn yet has many features found on expensive editing software packages.
Cons
Recorder is too simple. You should be able tune and setup the recording instead of fixing afterward with the editor.
Summary
Great editor but recorder needs some attention to details & lacks real-time editing tools while recording.

"Very easy to use and works as advertised"
Version: Free Sound Recorder 7.8.5
Pros
Extremely simple to use. One jack goes to cassette recorder and other end goes to line-in of computer sound card. Choose your directory. Choose your recording format. Mouse-click on the red record button, then name your file. Press OK to start.
Cons
Doesn't come with flexibility to convert to other formats once the original format is selected. But, for free...who cares. I was so pleased with this free download I decided to pay for the 'support' package.
Summary
5/27/09. I spent several hours trying to convert the four 90 minute audio cassette tapes of a family reunion made 25 years ago into mp3 digital format. I had a digital voice recorder and tried voice playing the from 3 different cassette players into this unit. Also tried direct cable connections to this digital voice recorder. This worked, but the sound quality was unacceptable. I searched "download.com" and read the few reviews on this before actually downloading the software. I was extremely pleased with the results. Set up was very quick...absolutely no problems and I was up and running within 5 minutes. The big plus is that the resultant MP3 playback sound quality was much BETTER than the original tapes. Somehow most of the hiss from the tapes was taken out. I don't usually write reviews, but I thought I owe'd it to these folks to say how I felt. My thanks go out to them.
