CNET Editors' review
The first thing you should know about Free MP3 Format is that it's definitely not free. The next thing you should know is that it's more confusing to use than it should be. Since the application lets you convert audio files via the Windows' context menu, it should be a snap to operate. However, the lack of a dedicated interface results in some problems. For instance, we could never figure out how to change the destination directory for our new tracks and thus had much trouble locating them. The app can turn WAVs into MP3 or WMA files and can uncompress MP3s to the WAV format. If you opt to convert to MP3, you'll find a few options, such as the ability to apply compression, as well as high-pass and low-pass filters. However, the app only supports bit rates up to 160Kbps, and in our tests, we never successfully got the WMA option to work. The trial version only functions for a week and annoys you with aggressive nag screens. Considering how easy it is to find a functional, feature-rich conversion utility these days, we can't get too enthusiastic about Free MP3 Format.Publisher's Description
