"Perfect for my (modest) needs."
Version: Free Audio Editor 2010 8.3.2
Pros
I used this to edit a number of recorded lectures. The source recordings were marginal, in that there was a mid-range ringing sound, as if from a bad mike or overloaded amp. The editor made it easy to edit out and long pauses and other dead spots, and it let me run a filter past the entire set of recordings to strip out most of the ringing noise.
Cons
The only technical issue, as others have noted, is that in the free version you can only save files as WAV. I was shooting for MP3s. Fortunately, I have another freeware product (dBpowerAMP Music Converter) which let me convert WAV to MP3 easily, and with adjustable compression.
A more general issue is that I am not trained as a sound editor. Like many editing products, this would benefit from a beginner-oriented tutorial guide.
But this is quibbling. Free Audio Editor 2010 is a very satisfactory product. -
"You get what you pay for :\"
Version: Free Audio Editor 2010 8.3.2
Pros
Good editing options, works better than anything else I've used for free. Will edit most file types.
Cons
After editing it only saves in .WAV but that's not too bad there are many free converters. I was already using Full Video Converter Free which converts video to audio, and audio and video files between file types.
Summary
Since most audio editors aren't free, I would recommend this one. I don't like to pay for software of any kind. This program will do a lot of what you want it to, and if you can find a video/audio converter (which is not hard) then you might like it. If you want a program that does more than this one, please, have a credit card ready.

"t's a multi-purpose audio program, easy for users."
Version: Free Audio Editor 2010 8.3.2
Pros
Just easy. I drag the sound file to the program and use those buttons to edit with a wide range of editing features and audio effects. It has a wonderful mixing tool to mix different audio tracks. Besides I find a tool to grab tracks from CD directly
Cons
The Trim Start/End & Crop features are OK to get the part i want cut, however, i hope you guys can provide a button or something to directly split the audio file from the position i specify on the waveform.
Summary
Although not perfect, this is an awesome audio editor product. Recorder, editor, burner, ripper, ID3, TTS... It has almost everything an editor should. The time triggered recording is convenient for some radio recording.
The TTS converter is awesome as i downloaded a male voice package (the Microsoft voice package in my system sucks and i hate those ROBO sound). I suggest you combine an excellent voice package in you editor so that users don't have to search for an acceptable voice.
The effects are numerous. Nothing so different comparing to the other editors, echo, fade, speed/pitch change, normalize, etc., but the real-time effect preview is practical. What i like most is undo/redo as i always make mistakes~
As a free product, it combines all the popular features and as long as you are a user with some editing experience, you'll find it so familiar and improved; for beginners, it won't take long to find what you need for those big buttons, graphical interface, help manuals, online tutorial in both text with pix and video with narration...
There are still many tools that i've not tried out. Maybe i'll find something fancy later.

Updated on Mar 7, 2011I can't believe it - i input almost video files of almost all formats i got in my laptop and your video to audio converter converts them all. Now i'm so curious about this handy sound extractor. Let's see if i could find a video type that it doesn't load. -

Cons

-
"Totally worthless AND a huge waste of time!"
Version: Free Audio Editor 2010 8.3.2
Pros
It doesnt work for anything I need it for, so ZERO pro's
Cons
Won't work for MP3 and is just a hook to get you to buy software that actually works.
Summary
Lets you work all day on a file, but when you try to save it, you have to pay money for an upgrade to save in anything but a WAV file, and who uses WAV? Deceptive. The publisher should be forced to pay me for the 2 hours I wasted downloading this garbage and working on my MP3 file and cluttering up my computer.

Summary
I haven't used Free Audio Editor extensively, but when I was looking to do some quick and simple audio editing without having to spend ages working out how, this s/w was all I needed.
