"Easy to use until a crash"

March 31, 2012  |  By gwen721

 |  Version: FormatFactory 2.90

Pros

Easy to use
Many video formats supported
No limits in video size for conversion
Multi-threaded

Cons

If you stop a job, it no longer seems that you can re-process that file.

Summary

I noticed a few times that if a file fails to convert, or if you need to stop processing files you've already added for an import, that the software errors out when you attempt to reprocess those files. I receie the error message "Fail to create AVS file" for every file that I try to reprocess.

I've looked around, and I was unable to find a lot file or any temp files that could potentially be causing an issue.

This issue makes the program unusable for me if I need to reprocess a file due to a failure.

"Tons of Malware and CPU Hog"

March 22, 2012  |  By stevemib

 |  Version: FormatFactory 2.90

Pros

It does convert vids fast and very well.

Cons

It pushed my CPU Quad core to 100% and after finished the render it stayed at 70%. I rebooted my machine and still the same. I uninstalled it and stuck at 70-80%. Ran ASC and still stuck. Not a happy camper!

"Good old software"

March 20, 2012  |  By Epikurosz

 |  Version: FormatFactory 2.90

Pros

It's FREE!
It's easy to use.
Makes a good job.
Has many features.

Cons

Doesn't support 1920x1080.

Summary

It was a good choice until now, but with the arrival of wide-screen TVs I have to switch to something else.

"Very good transcoder/converter."

March 19, 2012  |  By dafolzey

 |  Version: FormatFactory 2.90

Pros

Minimal loss of quality.
Easy to use.
Support for nearly every media file type.
Better than Any Video Converter free.
Free

Cons

Poor Default Bitrates.

Summary

I have used Any Video Converter, AVIDemux, and MediaMonkey for converting videos, and this is the easiest to use, only one that supports multi-core execution and has the best end results. It is also the only one that can rip audio from a video and produce a file that will actually open. Just make sure to specify the bit rate you want, for some reason the defaults are so low that on video the picture is choppy and The Blind Side looks like a cartoon, and for audio guitar sounds from Brad Paisley sound like the Black Eyed Peas. I have never used paid for software for transcoding videos and music like Nero, but since this is 100% free (no ads, watermark or trial period) I don't see a reason to.

"Poor DVD to .mpg Conversion"

March 16, 2012  |  By triplejackinga

 |  Version: FormatFactory 2.90

Pros

Slick interface, and seems to be fairly intuitive.

Cons

Tried converting a DVD to .mpg, so we could upload it, and no matter how we did it, it was horribly poor.

Summary

I have a DVD of our baby's 3D ultrasound, which I wanted to upload, so we can share it with friends & family.
The original length is about 15 minutes. I tried converting this using Format Factory in various ways, but no matter what I did, the conversion was very poor quality. The audio was bad quality, and it somehow managed to make a 15 minute video much longer, up to 30+ minutes.

"New Version 2.90 Sucks"

March 15, 2012  |  By bluedmax

 |  Version: FormatFactory 2.90

Pros

None that I can think of.

Cons

Just about everything.

Summary

Version 2.8 was my "Go To" program for file conversion. 2.9 is full of adware that takes forever to delete from hidden files.
What a piece of junk.

"Worked for me and DID ask about Ask.com add-ons prior."

March 07, 2012  |  By Matt_at_CPS

 |  Version: FormatFactory 2.90

Pros

Converted my WMV to SWF just fine.

Cons

I felt the user-interface was a bit awkward, though certainly not difficult to use.

Summary

Not sure if they've updated it since these older reviews or if the past reviewers installed without paying much attention, but it did indeed provide check-boxes for the Ask.com add-ons. They ARE selected by default but you can click to deselect them and it will not install the Ask.com toolbar, etc. If you're looking for a decent, free file converter, look no further.
