"Infected my BIOS!"
Version: FormatFactory 2.70
Pros
Looked good. Looked legit. However...
File (a 50.9 MB ZIP file) was virus scanned on download completion - passed.
Just to be safe, I scanned the zip archive - safe.
After extracting the sole exe file, I scanned it before running it - safe.
This was with AVG free, latest updates)
Something in the executable that *looks* safe is actually very dangerous!Cons
Tried three conversions, all failed.
This is what it did to my old 32 bit PC:
1. PC got progressively worse as the worm first disabled UDMA from primary AND secondary IDE channels. I knew this because of the characteristic noises the drive makes in PIO mode (like a squeak).
2. Then it went about creating bad blocks on my system drive. A WD drive utility I used via a system rescue CD confirmed this and corrected (erased) the bad blocks.
3. It wiped my drives serial number, making it 0000-0000 as reported by same WD utility.
So I enabled system BIOS boot change warning (virus) alarm and this simply confirmed my suspicions. On restart, there were the warnings of boot sector change request.
My BIOS is still infected, but now contained.
I'll have to re-flash it.Summary
Lost a few days due to this "freeware" that I downloaded from the "official" site:
http://www.pcfreetime.com/
All because my lounge room DVD player is fussy on what type of AVI it's willing to play!
See kids? Technology is evil >: -
"BEWARE. Virus-like and doesn't work."
Version: FormatFactory 2.70
Pros
none (that fills my minimum)
Cons
1. Did not convert my 10 minute .MOV file. I just wanted to compress it. When I finally figured out how to "open" a file (not obvious), the "conversion" was only the first 2 seconds and I see no way to select more.
2. Installed ASK without asking me. Attempts to un-install ASK were sabatoged. Even System Restore Point restore was torpedoed until I did it from SAFE mode.Summary
It's a come-on. Ask is dipping to new lows.

"Quick, Easy, Comprehensive, Excellent"
Version: FormatFactory 2.70
Pros
I've been using FormatFactory for over 2 years, and have loved it. It is easy to use, converts everything, and has a ton of conversion options for advanced users. The batch conversion is especially handy when you are wanting to rip audio from a bunch of videos, or something like that. I've used it to convert videos to MP3's for my phone, I've ripped my DVD's to 3GP or MP4 to put on my phone, and lots of other thing. There is an option to only convert part of a video or song, and I've used that to make my own MP3 ringtones.
Cons
The only negative I can think of is that when ripping DVD's, it seems to take a long time. However, I've never used other DVD ripping software to compare it too, so maybe that's just the way it is. But, it seems like it converts the video in "real time", meaning it takes almost as long to rip as it would take for the movie to play. The conversion time seemed consistent on both my dual-core, 4GB laptop and on my quad-core, 8GB desktop. It works though, no question... I've ripped a lot of my DVD collection, you just can't be in a hurry for it.
Summary
Great piece of free software. Converts everything. Last install screen gives you the option of installing the Ask.com toolbar... make sure to read each install screen!

Cons

"Beware malware!"
Version: FormatFactory 2.70
Pros
None I can think of.
Cons
Without asking permission or giving any warning, FileFactory installed the Ask.com toolbar in all 3 of my browsers (IE, Chrome, Firefox), set their default search engines to Ask.com, and made Ask.com their home page. My trust that Cnet would protect me from malware like this was obviously misplaced.

"Being a beginner, it was intuitive."
Version: FormatFactory 2.70
Pros
It seems to handle the majority of file formats
Cons
I cannot think of any, I have not yet able to explorer entirely.
Summary
It is a very pleasing free tool

"Good, but not userfriendly"
Version: FormatFactory 2.70
Pros
It's the only program I found that can manage video, audio and pictures. So you don't need 3 different programs.
Cons
It does its job, but it's not userfriendly.
• If you want to select the location you have to go to the program properties. It took me a while to figure that out.
• You can also not first add the files in a kind of overview and then select the output format. You have to first select the format and then the files.
• Select the right device isn't perfect: you can choose IPod in a list, but you still have to know the right dimensions (by the way iPod Classic is 320x240)
• For some reason it got buttons for searching the words camera and mobile on Ask.com. It's not really bothering, but useless and they take a lot of place.Summary
WEB BROWSER BAR ALERT: CNET TRIES TO ADD ANOTHER WEBBROWSERBAR! BE SURE YOU DESELECT IT. FORMAT FACTORY WANTS TO INSTALL A YAHOO TOOLBAR! DESELECT IT AS WELL!
I WAS WRONG: you can change the destination folder in the conversion setting window.
Further: if you want to convert images as well as video's: this is useful, if you only need video's, I enjoyed Freemake much much better (I really loved that program!)

I'm really spamming this site with useless comments now, but they should make it a bit more easy to use. (I'm sorry) :) -

"Very easy to use."
Version: FormatFactory 2.70
Pros
User friendly. Conversions are queued. All presets for each format conversion are commonly used settings. At the same time, can be manually configured for advanced users. Fast conversion.
Cons
The only con is for people like me who dislikes the default "Choose directory" dialog, when choosing where to save the converted files, where you have to click your way towards the folder you want to save it to. Which is slower than the "Choose file" dialog (that can also work for folders), where you can paste the address path. This is negligible though.
Summary
Installed on Windows 7, 64-bit.
Later in the installation, you will see a checkbox "Install Inside Codecs". This means it will install it's own set of supported codecs/formats, in it's own folder, without affecting your current configuration. This should avoid conflicts with other codec packs suck as k-lite or shark007.
