What's the biggest threat to your data? Is it snooping, or device theft, or hacking, or simple carelessness? How about all of the above? Suppose you could lock down your files, folders, drives, and devices with password protection; encrypt critically important data on the fly; store it on your smartphone or thumbdrive; and back it all up to a secure online storage locker that automatically syncs data and lets you access it on mobile devices? We'll tell you now that we're referring to one utility, Folder Lock, before we continue enumerating its features, which also include stealth mode, hack protection and logging (including forced shutdown); wallets for personal information like credit card numbers, file shredding, application-level passwords; and more. The latest release, Folder Lock 7, adds enhanced drag-and-drop capability, easier unlocking, and automatic backups of encrypted data to your online storage share. Folder Lock is free to try, with a 30-use limit.

Folder Lock installed smoothly in both our 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7 systems. On first run, you're prompted to create a master password and enter it twice, consecutively: it's important to get it right. Folder Lock's colorful, wizardlike interface resembles a lot of premium tools, especially backup utilities. The left sidebar accesses its main features -- Lock Files, Encrypt Files, Secure Backup, Protect USB/CD, and Make Wallets -- which are all pretty much self-explanatory, except Make Wallets (which are nothing like you made at summer camp). All these features are easy to set up, and Folder Lock's interface walked us through each step. Clicking Learn More opened the User Guide, an excellent Help file that explains everything about using Folder Lock. An Xtras menu offers a file shredder and history cleaner; both pull their weight.

Folder Lock 7's security tools make it worth paying for over a collection of similar freeware tools, if it's possible to assemble one. But the online storage and sync makes the crucial difference. It not only stores and syncs data but also creates fully portable, secure, encrypted Lockers. You can even convert Lockers into encrypted executable files you can distribute to clients with help from the Protect USB/CD feature.

Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of Folder lock 7.1.1.

"I like its portability feature"

August 28, 2009  |  By keithkevin96

 |  Version: Folder Lock 6.2.5

Pros

I like its portability feature because I was in need to protect my thumb drive so that the information in it cannot be misused, but i want something that not only protect my data on my thumb drive but also on my laptop.

Cons

don't forget your password because It logs you off if you enter wrong password

Summary

I have been using Folder Lock for about six months now. I have tried numerous encryption tools and found that it is the one I am looking for. Its portability feature makes it ideal for using on a thumb drive. The program is also very easy to use and has an attractive interface.

"Waring!!! Read "All versions" negative reviews first!!!"

August 27, 2009

 |  Version: Folder Lock 6.2.5

Pros

None None None

Cons

Waring!!! Waring!!! Waring!!! Read All negative comments from user reviews on the All-versions link BEFORE downloading Folder Lock to understand what you are in for with this product!!!

Summary

My personal experience: Having forgotten (Folder Lock thinks so) the unlock password for Folder Lock 6.1.6, it locked the computer up! I had to Force restart computer (not good for system stability) which allowed the computer to operate, but I still can't remove program.

More than 2 months later, their "24 hour-a-day guaranteed" customer service still has not provided help. Just email "Newsoftwares.net" and observe the 100% silence for yourself.

***Their breach of their own "24 hour-a-day" customer guarantee is a demonstration of a company someone should not deal with***

"beautiful security program i have ever used"

August 27, 2009  |  By soniomaccagnano

 |  Version: Folder Lock 6.2.5

Pros

nice, easy to use and reliable for all importtant files and documents. I tried its trial version and used each and every feature to test it by myself, and found it good and now i am a registered user :)

Cons

i didn't find any problem in fact all the files that i locked are inaccessible without my password.

Summary

i used its trial version and now using full version and pretty much satisfied specially with the feature that protected lockers cannot be deleted without correct password, this ensures me that whatever i have locked/encrypt in my locker is completely safe and cannot be lost

"If you want protection, look elsewhere"

August 27, 2009  |  By mccusker123

 |  Version: Folder Lock 6.2.5

Pros

It has nice colors. Honestly.

Cons

Folder Lock 6.2 or (probably later) can be easily circumvented by anyone, even a registered user like me.

Summary

Here's how:

Install Folder Lock on your PC or laptop, but don't select the option to "Start on Bootup" (or words to that effect). Attach an USB drive and use the Folder Lock program options to install Folder Lock onto the USB drive. Go to the USB drive (as mentioned in documentation) and start the Folder Lock program, putting some files into the USB "locker". Now you can either lock the files, encrypt them, whatever you like. Now Normally remove the USB drive and reboot the computer. When the desktop reappears put the USB drive back into your PC or laptop and use any file manager (I use Total Commander) to go directly to the Folder Lock program folder, on the USB drive. Within it, you will find a folder called "Locked" or "Folder Lock", something like that. Simply double click the folder and VOILA!!. All your data/programs will be easily accessible to read/run/copy/edit. Now is that security??

You ask, but "Why does this work"?

Because the folder lock program files are not running and hence are not active to "lock" or protect your data. As for encryption, that is bogus too, since it takes only a couple seconds to encrypt files of over 1GB in size and that is simply not possible with today's processing power in a regular PC. Plus, my test above allows you to choose to encrypt your data and you can STILL easily get access to it.

Bottom line: If you don't believe it, simply follow instructions above.

Buyer Beware!

"good UI, way overpriced, but gets the job done"

August 26, 2009  |  By patriotism101

 |  Version: Folder Lock 6.2.5

Pros

Love the UI, all the extras which I honestly don't need but they can add it for others. don't know how it all works but it works.

Cons

super rip off! I had to pay 25 dollars to upgrade from the 5x to 6x, they only got that because I wanted full 64 bit vista support. The new UI and whatever tweaks they added is not worth 25 dollars. Also Norton IS ID's it as hacktool.rootkit virus.

Summary

Good product if you got the cash, if not I'd follow other people's advice and zip it and then encrypt it. Probably works just as good but its up to you, definitely try it before you spend 40 dollars to buy it.

"reliable for USB drive as well as for CD and DVD use"

August 26, 2009  |  By dannysmpsn

 |  Version: Folder Lock 6.2.5

Pros

Folder Lock protection works smoothly on pc as well as on USB drive and even on CD and DVD. There is no need to install Folder Lock again on USB drive, simply add encrypted locker to your USB or create locker directly on USB

Cons

I don?t know what this user is saying may be he isn?t using Folder Lock because what he mentioned is completely wrong. I protect all my important documents in my USB drive that I want to carry with me all the time and do not have any such problem

Summary

First of all there is no need to install Folder Lock again on USB drive or on any other computer when you move your USB drive from one computer to another. Simply plug in USB drive, either create locker directly on USB drive using Folder Lock ?Browse? button or move/copy encrypted locker to USB drive using ?Portability Options?. When you?re done, Folder Lock will prompt a portable security option, clicking Yes will create an autoplay password protection. It means that whenever you plug in your USB drive to any computer, Folder Lock ask you locker path and correct password to open you protected files and documents. One more thing you can move your locker when you have chosen encrypt feature. Lock feature is not supported on USB drive, and when you encrypt your data and move it to your USB drive there is no other way to access your data except using correct password.

Believe me its really secure and reliable software. I am using it since last 10months and do not have any problem just follow the correct method, don?t make blunders.
