"Essential catastrophe"

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Firepad's Picture Viewer v. 6.5 f3 promises to be able to read nearly any type of file. I used it for reading maps (one of the recommended uses) on a Palm T5. Perhaps a quarter of the time, the program would either open up the pictures with skewed colors (making the maps unreadable) or crash the Palm on exiting. The pop-up menu frequently inhibits scrolling with the stylus, and, even when scrolling does work properly, it's rather jerky (cf. the smooth scrolling with VisualIT's maps). The zoom feature does the exact opposite of what the name implies: it makes the map *smaller,* enabling more of it to be seen. There are two problems with this: 1) The zoom increments are too discrete (3 zoom-levels only) and most users will want to *enlarge* the map in order to see it in greater detail (and be able to read the street names!). For instance, the RATP's bus map for Paris (intended for this program) can be viewed in only 1/3, 2/3 or full size--but in none of these sizes can any of the names of stops or numbers of bus-lines be read. If this program worked properly, then the ability to take normal maps, digitize them (scanner, camera), convert them to Firepad-readable format and read them on a Palm would be great, but this program is far too buggy, fails and crashes too often and is too unreadable to be of much use. In addition, trying to read anything on a Palm outdoors is nearly impossible because of the sunlight. I would really love to love this program since it promises to enable me to do things that I think are essential, but this is the most frustrating program I've ever used on the Palm--and all this for $30!
