This utility stands as a fine data-backup and synchronization solution. Since FileBack PC provides a number of features that let you control backup jobs in great detail, less experienced or casual users may opt to use the step-by-step wizard. System administrators will appreciate the ability to perform backups on remote machines and install the app on multiple computers at once. You can monitor progress via logs and e-mail notifications, and the program can maximize time and system resources by archiving only necessary files. For instance, it can keep a certain number of file versions or it can save all versions over a specified interval of time. You can even set FileBack PC to automatically launch an archive job every time you alter a file. Because of its advanced features and functionality, this program is more appropriate for professionals than for home users.Publisher's description

Version: FileBack PC 4 20-Jul-2006
"Brilliant! It is different to most other backup programs, which is a good thing."
Pros: I have been using FileBack PC since 1999 and it just gets better and better with excellent support from the author. I use it for backing up 5 servers to a master backup server and for backing up our client PCs to a server and to removable media.
A few of the things I like are:
* Does not create a single backup file that needs a special program to view therefore backed up files are easy to access for review so no need to restore files unnecessarily.
* No need to recreate backup jobs when new files and folders are added to the source, as they can be automatically included.
* As it only writes file that have changed since the last backup it is fast.
* Compression and encryption available if required.
* Can be configured to backup when the source file is changed or at timed intervals or on shutdown.
* Backup jobs can be setup to automatically run on insertion of the media.
* Multiple versions of backup files can be maintained.
* Many options are available so it can do everything I need.
Cons: Although the many options are a strong point for allowing it to do what is required, it does make it daunting to new users who think they need to know what each one does. In most cases the default settings are OK.

Version: FileBack PC 4 20-Jul-2006
"Flexible, powerful backup program"
Pros: All backup software packages I've tried have their unique approaches to the problem, and FileBack PC is no exception. As other reviewers have noted, its interface takes a little getting used to. But it's well worth the effort, because the program is extremely powerful and flexible. Backup jobs can be created with a myriad of trigger conditions and ways of keeping backed up files to choose from. Scheduling of jobs is easy to do and works well. Synchronizing files across computers reliably is much more difficult than it sounds; again, FBPC has thought this through well and can be relied on. You can track its activity on a well-designed and very detailed log with good filtering which allows you to focus on the actions you're interested in. And so on; there's just too much there to describe in less than a full review. Bottom line: I've relied on the program for critical backup functions for more than a decade. I have not noticed the recent deterioration reported by some users; to the contrary, in my experience the application continues to improve.
Cons: The interface is certainly easier to use than it was, but it still takes a little getting used to. The documentation has always been a bit rudimentary, and the on-line help is still not complete. But I have always found support good, and the on-line support forum is excellent: the software author monitors it closely and is highly responsive to user questions.

"Excellent, intuitive interface. Powerful, and extremely flexible!"
Pros: I use this product every day to synchronize my personal laptop over our network in the office, as well as my own network at home. I keep roughly 3 to 4 copies of a file at any given time (some of different versions while in the progress of a project), and this program manages them all impeccably. It delivers absolute peace of mind, especially if you have data that needs to be shuffled around quite a bit, and still needs to be protected from an inevitable hard drive crash down the road. Since I've started using it about 3 years ago, it has improved in many areas, including the user interface. It might take a little getting used to, but it's well worth the effort. You can pretty much trigger a backup with anything from a hardware device insertion (USB memory stick) to a "cup-holder" tray deployment. (As long as you have a CD and NOT a cup in it when it deploys!) It's wonderful that the backups don't have to be stored in a proprietary backup file, but are actual copies of the original. If I only need one current version of a file, this is a real time-saver as opposed to restoring a whole backup job. If I need to simply copy a bunch of files over, I generally set up a simple backup job within Fileback PC which keeps going while skipping over problematic or corrupt files. Windows just cancels the copy process when it encounters problems during a copy and paste transfer, so having FileBack has been an incredible time saver. It will also tell you which files it encountered a problem with! The log-file it generates has about as much data embedded in it as a NASA black box recorder, so if you need to know what the problem is that you're experiencing (most often for me, it's with the network,) it will tell you EVERYTHING. I also like how often software updates are posted and automatically installed. It really shows how dedicated this company is to producing and maintaining a top-quality professional product. In conclusion ---- Unbelievable product at an even MORE unbelievable price.
Cons: I suppose that all products are subject to scrutiny, and this shouldn't be any exception... but it really is difficult to find something that I don't like about this program. At first, I would say that the user interface is somewhat daunting. But if you take the time to learn this program, that flaw will turn into a huge plus. It will help you recognize how powerful and flexible this program can be, for just about ANY situation you can think of.
