Publisher's Description
From SkyTag Software, Inc.:
For working with files and folders such as:
- View and edit a wide range of file and folder information.
- Create droplet applications that automatically apply changes to items dropped on them, including the contents of folders.
- Find files and folders using an extensive set of search criteria. Enhance file searches with plug-ins that extend file search capabilities. Conveniently perform a wide variety of actions on found items. Make File Buddy your default file finding application using the File Buddy CP control panel.
- Modify the names of multiple files at once. For example, remove ".txt" from the names of a group of files.
- Use contextual menus to accomplish many tasks in a single step. Contextual menus are supported on all versions of the Macintosh operating systems.
- Create custom icons: from PICTs on the clipboard; from other icons; for folders using a varitey of templates; with blank icons; using only small icons.
- Create aliases.
- Find empty files and folders, orphaned files, duplicate files, broken aliases, and unused preference files.
- Automatically repair broken aliases
- Rebuild the desktop file.
- Move, delete, and copy files. Even copy invisible files and use the Replace Different option to skipping copying files that already exist.
- Delete data and resource forks from files.
- Erase files and unused disk space.
- Create snapshots that can be used to track the changes on a disk, such as files installed by an installer. Use snapshots to uninstall applications.
What's new in this version:
- File Buddy 7 does not yet recognize bundled applications as applications. Stayed tuned.
- Orphaned Files is not yet able to determine which files are orphaned. Even when this feature is updated, differences between OS X and classic OSs will necessitate some differences in the results.

"The only comprehensive file utility for Mac out there."
Version: File Buddy X 9.0.2
Pros
Very feature rich.
Cons
No longer supported
Summary
Would be the only file management tool worth having if it was still supported.
-
"no longer supported"
Version: File Buddy X 9.0.2
Pros
v. powerful
Cons
author had too many irons in the fire and I guess the bad economy knocked out his support of FB.
Summary
I'm back, hunting for a replacement.
I'm sad to give up this great program, but bugs are driving me bugs -
"Snow Leopard Problems Too..."
Version: File Buddy X 9.0.2
Pros
Convenient, Reliable, Time Saving - Performs Essential Daily Tasks
Cons
None - Except that it has lost functionality with the recent Snow Leopard security upgrade (can not use Administrator Access Mode and doesn't retain my serial number).
Summary
I have relied on File Buddy since it's inception for the daily tasks of manipulating files - changing type & creator, renaming, searching, etc, etc. It is always open on my Mac and is peerless for these important tasks. I couldn't begin to say how many thousands of broken files it has quickly and conveniently fixed for me over the years, saving me countless hours of work. PLEASE don't say that development has stopped. What would I do without it?

"A recent upgrade of Snow Leopard makes this utility ???"
Version: File Buddy X 9.0.2
Pros
Up until the latest security updates for Snow Leopard, File Buddy has been totally reliable.
Cons
With the latest security updates for Snow Leopard, I can't assign File Buddy as a Start Up item. Once booted I can start up File Buddy and it works. This may be related to the fact that FB semi-frequently asks for my registration number.
Summary
This utility is still useful; however, it is painfully obvious that it is no longer being supported, i.e., upgraded with changes in Apple System software.

Version: File Buddy X 9.0b13

...Replace\"-feature from CopyAgent back!!!
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I bought File Buddy only because the Developer promised that he has built a feature that we miss since the days of System 8 and 9 when CopyAgent made our mac-life easier.
The supposed FileBuddy-feature:
"Replace Different option to skipping copying files that already exist"
does not work since the first versions until now.
It doesn't recognize Subfolders and stops working most of the time doing nothing.
Dear developer why is it so difficult to implement this feature flawlessly like the developers of CopyDoubler and CopyAgent did already a long time ago? -
"Complaints are mistaken"
Version: File Buddy X 9.0b12
Summary

The programmer's email is listed right on the SkyTag website. I emailed to find out product status and received reply within hours. The programmer (Larry) was amazed that anyone had problems with the beta expiring since he had uploaded a newer version before the expiration of the previous one. He confirmed that File Buddy is still an active product and is being actively maintained and improved.
I have tried every search program on VersionTracker and FileBuddy is far and away the best. Superb user interface - minimal interaction needed for basic searches, yet permits very sophisticated searches and manipulation of file characteristics. Combines excellent searching with the capabilities of both Get Info and X-Ray. I use this dozens of times per day and love it.

"An ambitious feature set, but..."
Version: File Buddy X 9.0b11
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've used File Buddy for many years, but starting with version 5, I increasingly found that each version introduced rough edges to some of the features that previously worked smoothly for me, as well as discovering limping implementations of the new "sweet stuff" which was intended to make me want to upgrade. If you catch the developer on one of his (rare) good days, he might "didst favour" you with a useful response, especially when you're just presenting a "how do I..." concern. On the other hand, be prepared to be challenged/ridiculed/scolded & finally ignored, if you attempt to have bugs in the existing features corrected... Truthfully, there is no other application that attempts the breadth of features posed by File Buddy. Still, when you find one or more of those promised features don't work just right for you, I encourage you to seek-out one or more "one-trick pony" freeware applications for those tasks, rather than engaging in protracted, unproductive mind-wrestling with this developer!
