We were beginning to wonder what it would take to get us excited about yet another CD ripper. Then we checked out the full-featured and free FairStars CD Ripper. It doesn't offer the mind-blowing functionality of Audiograbber, but it's more than capable enough for most purposes.

It supports WAV, MP3, OGG, WMV, and FLAC files, and even VQF and APE audio formats. Its interface is generally attractive, though slightly unpolished. We were more impressed with its smart design, which allows you to adjust all major settings from the main window. In our testing, CD ripping went off without a hitch.

The program doesn't query the CDDB Web database by default, but once we ticked the appropriate box in the Options menu, it quickly retrieved album and track names from the Web and named files based on artist, album, year, or genre. If you need a full-fledged freeware CD ripper, FairStars CD Ripper is a solid choice.

FairStars CD Ripper rips audio CD tracks to WMA, MP3, OGG, VQF, FLAC, APE, and WAV formats on the fly. Free CDDB is supported (querying and submitting). The program supports normalization when ripping as well as ID3 tag. It also supports playback with its built-in player.

Version 1.26 corrects a crash error caused by the tag of MP3 VBR, and corrects some skin errors under Windows X64.

Version 1.25 is a bug fixing release.
