CNET Editors' review
Next to antivirus protection, regular backups may be the single most important measure you should take to protect your PC, your data, and yourself, yet studies consistently show it's the preventative measure PC users neglect most. There is simply no excuse for not backing up your system, especially when you consider the following facts: (1) You have a lot of money invested in your hardware and software; (2) Your PC most likely contains files, records, and archives that are important to your life and well-being; (3) something is certain to go wrong; and (4) backups are easy, especially with excellent free backup utilities like FBackup around to do all the work for you. You can schedule regular backups, of course, but you can also choose full or partial backups, levels of compression, drive mirroring, backups of specific folders or files, and much more. It creates standard ZIP files that you can access with any compression utility.
FBackup is based on Backup4all, Softland's flagship product and a powerful backup solution. However, for most users, the freeware utility is more than enough. With a simple two-part interface and a wizard that explains each step, it's about as user friendly as backup utilities get. You can choose either an external device (recommended) or a network location to store your backup.
FBackup is free, and it's ready for Windows 7. It makes regular backups painless, and it produces high-quality backups that will help you recover your system quickly when, not if, something unpleasant occurs.
Publisher's Description
From Softland:
FBackup is freeware backup program for Windows. FBackup protects your important files and folders from partial or total loss by automating backup tasks, password protecting and compressing it to save storage space. Using FBackup you can easily backup to any local or network drive or to external drives (such as USB drives). FBackup can backup open/locked files and it can perform full and mirror backups (backup type that does not compress the files).
When defining a backup you can also set file filters and schedule the backup for automatic execution. You can run predefined backups, such as My Documents, My Pictures or Outlook Express and load backup plugins that will back up the settings and data of specific applications. FBackup has ZIP64 support (can create backups over 2GB) and creates standard zip files, meaning that you can access it with any zip compatible utility.
What's new in this version: Version 4.4.194 includes several language file corrections as well as other small fixes.

"It works and it saved me hours after my computer crash"
Version: FBackup 4.4.194
Pros
This product saved me hours of time when I got a virus that caused the Windows XP program to fail. I had to recover the computer and I was able to put back in all of the things that were on the computer before the crash.
Cons
It is a little slow doing a backup BUT it is well worth the time taken to do it.
Summary
I did a complete backup of my C drive. It copied everything that I had in the drive and when I ran the restore It put everything back in and the computer was once
again up to date. Since the product is free I asumed that it would not be as complete as a costly program that I used to have. I WAS COMPLETELY WRONG
AND THIS PROGRAM SAVED MY A**. -

"DIDN"T BACKUP ANYTHING - no files only empty folders"
Version: FBackup 4.4.194
Pros
Nice interface, easy to uninstall. If it had only done the job, it seemed like it might have had the features I wanted, mirror backup, and the choice to not put a lengthy drive to folder pathway into the backup folder.
Cons
DIDN"T BACKUP ANYTHING. Needs add-on xml files to even know how to copy some types of files.
Summary
I was looking for a mirror backup, one that would backup files in uncompressed version, so I tried this. XP OS, backup to external drive. My first test was to backup the Start Menu folder. I thoroughly read the manual. Turned off my antivirus antispyware, then many times tried all sorts of things, choosing mirror backup, uncompressed, even looked for and installed its various plugins so that it might recognize the files to back them up, but nothing, only empty folders and its own config file were placed in the backup location.
And strange that other backups don't need specific xml plugins to recognize that I want it to copy everything in the directory I specify. But I took that into consideration too, downloading all the plugins I thought might apply. And still no go.
A complete failure. -
"Very easy setup"
Version: FBackup 4.4.194
Pros
After only a few minutes I had set up and commenced backup. The interface is basic and comfortable. Highly recommend for peace of mind, no fuss backups. I prefer to backup using the mirror function so files are directly accessable.
Cons
So far I haven't noticed a downside.
